Cherry Picking Of Hulks

I think cherry picking is a form of cheating. It allows a player to obtain an item and leaving the hulk to not spawn. Therefore giving that player an advantage over other, even it if is a slight one.I suggest that either the debris has to be removed first before anything else or the item that is gathered be removed from their cargo hole as they leave the hulk with debris still in it. It is not good games play to leave it up to other players to clean up their mess and remove the debris so the hulk will respawn.

I have had a hulk despawn on me once, when I was trying to mine something too big for my reactor & prospect skill, so as far as I can tell they do despawn after a while.  Was a situatin where I was trying to mine about 15 or so refined L5 ores from a hulk, where it took almost my whole reactor to get one.  Was using a Terran Scout.

even though it might be debris, trade it to someone with negotiation skill, and, u get trade credit for it as well.. I thought we were all here to have fun. Just empty the hulk. Whats the big deal??

Exactly.... Cherry picking has been an issue since original (probably even in beta) game. Do not know why people can't just clear stuff instead of leave it but it is an annoyance with no "real" fix as I see it.

There's no fix needed, because there's nothing broken.

Well partially emptied hulks or roids could be set to auto-despawn just like a mob corpse. If nothing else, it would help to stop miners whining about cherry picking. It seems like a ritual for miners to whine about it and call each other out for suspicion of cherry picking. It drags the mining part of the community down and indirectly affects everyone else.

TBH I dunno which is worse, the whining about cherry picking or the actual cherry picking but the whining about cherry picking takes up so much of everyones time reading about it again and again on forums, or guild chat, or listening to complaints about it on voice comms. Just to get rid of that I wish the partially picked hulks or roids would despawn.

But miners being miners they'd just complain about something new!

I thought we have had this confirmed on many occasions that a picked field respawns anyway.

As I have always said, I'm usually happy to strip a half picked field and get the bonus you missed, but if there is a cherry ITS MINE!

I think sometimes it is the proximity of the hulk to mobs and it takes awhile to mine say 40 debris. The mobs hitting you interrupts your mining of the debris. I would love to see the mining operation not be interrupted as long as you can tank the damage. I feel this would help in some of the fields with mobs guarding the hulks.

This^

....yeh yeh.... old live.... new live (tm), but as it's new live.....

getting shot don't interupt your shootn laser, projectiles or missles...why your mining laser?

Ok..it's a "skill", so if it's not a shot of such magnitude that it would interupt a charge up of some "other" skill, don't disrupt this skill...

Especially when you are L8 shield and some piss ant L9 mob comes and tickles your shield...why would something that don't even give a piddling tick on your shield, disrupt your concentration on a hypothetical delicate operation such as targeting, maintaining and calibration of a mining laser?

  • 2 weeks later...

Mine them in order? Do you mean the first slot then the second in a hulk ?(I'm guessing thats what you mean, if not clarify otherwise)

I usually clean them up but as a suggestion why not (at least for hulks) make you mine them in order?

So you are going to play mom now? :) Eat your veggies before you cut into that steak....no no..you are drinking to much of you drink....eat some more veggies first then some of your starch...then you can have more fluids...

Are we going to go that far? really? :)

Look its WAI, it may yes, admittedly, be annoying to folks that others don't mine as they would like, sort of like the sqeeze the tube of toothpaste from the end....no.. from the middle arguement isn't it? No the toilet paper folds over, not under!!!

Are we going to really going to go to court over how toothpaste, toilet paper and hulks are consumed and divorce? :)

Yeh it's annoyance...grit your teeth..take a breath or three and get over it.

Heck, just mine it out yourself if it bothers you that much, and sell the junk off for cash, that's what I do, and I am making more money in this game than ever before.

The slag is pretty profitible, even if you don't get XP after a certain explore or trade level.  IMO the fact that picked hulks/roids/hydrocarbons/clouds despawn after a while, pretty much settles the issue for me.

the more attention you bring to this; the more people are going to do it.  besides not much you can do about it anyway, same thing is done with level 9 ores, nothing you can do about it, just take what you can get, when you can get & move on.

You get a bonus for emptying individual roids -so there is already an incentive to empty a hulk, add in the field cleared bonus which you can't get otherwise and you have a second bonus. Their loss if they don't empty everything.

Yes but that is not as much an incentive to 150 ppl that cherry pick. I think the best fix is to have them despawn after (lets say 5 minutes) if picked.  That goes for roids and hulks together, no matter the cricumstances you should be able to clear a roid/hulk in 5 munutes after prospecting.

Example:

You mine an ore that drains your reactor, you wait till recharge and mine again and repeat. That does not count into into despawn as you are actively "mining" between recharges. If you drain your reactor on one ore you are technically "in over your head", but as long as you keep mining the trigger for the respawn is not activated.

You mine x from a hulk/roid and leave then the timer kicks in (aka it is abandoned after you get what you want), then as it is attached to a field it triggers despawn/respawn of field unless some one else mines the same field again. That way no one goes to a roid and the entire field resets and they loose what they were after.

Just something to think about as I jump in on this.

Whenever a player warps to a nav of mob spawns, should they be required to kill every mob there before they leave?

No

Mobs have a quicker respawn and if not killed they go back to the spawn site (never stuck around after running to see what happens to a mob I found out that I could not kill) other than regenerating.

Roids are different as they do not attack (other than poprocks) or can not move (other than a respawn kicking in). As far as non miners are concerned they are "eye candy" this issue only affects "mining classes". All classes can attack a mob but only 3 can mine so the two to me are like comparing apples to habaneros.

Not really, its still a spawn from a drop/spawn table for items.  The method of acquisition differs but the result is the same.  It would be akin to someone sitting up in VG killing nothing but the bosses and leaving the rest of the mobs for everyone else.

Hulk fields do respawn btw.

If you want to get technical. You could say cherry picking is similar to taking a mob down to 50% then high tailing it. What happens if you do that?

There is a difference between the two, mining you can cherry pick every roid for whatever ore you want and still gain. But if you take a mob down to 50% you get nadda. Another way to look at it is do mobs drop stuff when you kill them 1/2 way or fully? If half way why not just kill it enough to drop what you want then leave the junk to some one else (that's what cherry picking does)?  I see no issue going into a packed field and grabbing what I need, but I always clear that roid if not the entire field when doing so with my miners.

Yes some high level can warp to a nav where a mini boss mob is and kill it then leave its escorts, but leaving junk in hulks/roids is different to me. Does the mini boss death trigger a total respawn (it should imo) or will it only respawn when escorts die (both can be seen as a negative depending on how you see it). I Remember in ST4 having to kill the escorts of a previous named mob then just shortly after the spawn boss respawns, but if a roid is cherry picked if you mine another roid in the field the field does not respawn as mobs do.

Cherry picking is different on many levels than what you are comparing Stanig (no offense, I just see two separate things)

It's been confirmed by multiple players and now by Stanig that hulk fields respawn whether they are cherry picked or not. I've seen it happen myself on multiple occasions. If you arrive at a field and looks like it was cherry picked, someone just beat you to it recently. Check back in 5-30 minutes. It's no different than someone mining the whole thing. It's two clicks from from any distance to see if it's been looted or not and then you can move on.
