1.
Fixed prices mean little or no competition between miners is possible. Just look at how ammo ores fared during live, they were one of the few things that were done right. They could only be mined which meant they had a value decided by supply/demand and not a ceiling value decided by the vendor. And to think that the field clear bonus got added to counter cherry picking, while the real reason people cherrypicked was because most ores were worthless... This goes to show the wrong approach to fixing mining problems as field clear bonus still means I have a hold full of useless ores.
Selling ores in as much demand as ammo ores should be no problem. With a healty population there should always be someone online willing to buy your ammo ores at a resonable price.
  2.
Lmao! wots the phone number again!?
Too bad we can't use ingame sound resources without the risk of aggroing EA. If we'd played Megan, Shakti, and Tada-O Commersial samples to whoever is calling we would get many callers.
  3.
I think I should note that as I was going through the Jenquai Seeker initial stages, I was told to gather some ore. This ore, I think, is going to be used to teach me to build components. (As I cannot) Note that as I cannot build components, I can't rip components for ore. So my ONLY choice is to get this ore from a miner. It's fairly common ore, and I won't have any trouble getting it, (I'm just using an alt to get it) but since the point of this thread is FORCING players to deal with other players for critical skills, then I feel that mission definately counts. Either you allow players to ask other players for fairly common items for advancement missions or you don't allow that. I honestly don't mind, I think it's a far cry from asking another player for a common, easily found component, and something they have to do optional content for. But then you've got to define what "easily found" means.
The easy way to solve this would be to add the ores in question as drops if they aren't already. Some ores do drop...
  4.
Do I smell auction house?
It does, but not quite. There price is still set by the seller, and not the buyer. I'd much rather have fixed prices though, and get the cash directly from the vendor, and not when someone else buys my item. The buy and sell prices should be between vendor buy and sell prices. It's not an easy thing to design though. The price you get if you sell something to him has to cover the manufacturing expenses. On the other hand, he can't pay too much. If he pays more than it costs to buy the components and manufacure an item, people will exploit it too make credits. Making a profit from selling to him should be dependant on manufacturing things from ores. A large dependance on quality should also be included. A 200% item should be much more expensive than a 190% one, since the demand drops significantly for each % of quality lost. For instance, a 100% bonus could be given for a 200% item, giving twice the base price, and if you base the bonus on quality to the power of 20, it would give a 35% bonus for a 190% quality item and a 1% bonus for a 160% quality item...
  5.
Something else to throw in on top of this dead horse... This idea may be nothing more to some than a way to stroke one's ego because of the sheer number of prints a builder has. I have witnessed many that are obsessed with getting missing prints, but build nothing to very little for other players. There a few great exceptions to this, like Lannister (and a few others), who are always at the ready and are willing to help people with their building needs. But there are those who merely collect the prints, and seldom build for even those in their own guilds. That being said, I don't judge how great a builder is by the number of prints he has, but rather by how he utilizes what he has for the greater good of everyone. Those who help others deserve this recognition a hell of alot more than the collector egomaniacs who only collect prints. Thanks for reading.
Having a list more representative of how much someone builds would be nice. Or even do some statistics of equipped items. Some kind of scale could be useful too. A top list of the sum of the vendor value of all the items that someone has equipped grouped on builder for instance. It would probably be a pain to code and heavy to run, but the information is there... Or a build count could be implented, but then we run the risk of rich people just building and dismantling to boost their numbers....
  6.
This is how I see a ideal system working: A builders list that has to be opted into. You choose if you want other players to see what you can build, and what toons names are. That then option is opt out by defualt...if you want others to see what you build you have to opt in. Based on that opt-in another opt-in is a builders ranking system that some seem to want so bad...it's their own little contest, let them have it, with a opt-in required for that as well. A independant "dropped by list" that is hide by defualt, and is wiki in nature, requires players to post as to a "sighting" of drop item, that has a spoiler system in place so those that want to see it have to opt-in, but does not require a opt-in to post to (you can give info about what you found to drop an item without everyone seeing who posted info, to forstall you getting /t ed to death in game) A hide status for log in as default, you need to opt in to release who can see when you log on. (maybe you want guildies to see you on, but not the whole server spamming you, maybe you DON't want guildies to see you on...maybe you aren't in a building mood and intend some intense shhot/loot..whatever) have a optin system so you can set your privacy. A tool page for builders to consolidate recipes known, across differing toons, allowing them to know with minimal research if they know a recipe or not. And to help them know what toon to log in to build that obscure recipe. Private chat channels w/pass code requirement so that you can log on incognito and converse with others on that channel to negotiate builds/auctions/raid etc. so as to not defeat the purpose of anonymous log on. I know thats all a tall order..but one can dream can't they?
All good ideas as far as I can tell, but I'd change to opt in by default. If build requests gets too annoying, you can opt out, but until then I think it would be better to leave it. It gives a wider range of builders which should spread the build requests and help reduce the annoyance factor. I don't mind building for someone if I have the time, but I'm not sure I'd bother opting in for it for all my alts... Not that I have any recipes in demand yet...
  7. I usually dual-box, and have been ever since I got my first buddy key for EnB. I have a third account, though I use it mostly for throw-away characters to boost xp when I map new sectors. Even though I'm a devoted miner and usually have one of my alts around to leach xp when I mine, it's not quite enough to go around, so extra explore xp is always welcome...
  8. I think it would have been better if core content like hull upgrade missions stayed away from single source supplies. It would have been better if the parts required were regular loot only components, like CE3K components. This way all classes would be able to finish it, but the fastest way if you were a TS would be to ask at trader to build it. If you choose lvl8's, you probably already have the required ore as a TS... The hard way would be to go out and loot it yourself, and the expensive way would be to go buy something and rip it for the component...
  9.
WOW thats a flashback. Forgot all about SETI. I think the last time I was messing with that was when EnB was live. I might give it another go here soon, especially now that I have a fleet of 30 computers I manage.
I did a search at SETI@home and found 2 teams. One was actually a team (Earth and Beyond: Online) from the old (live) days started by Albino Eatpod (rings a few bells I gather). They still seems to be active, at least a few of them... We could just join them...

It may be a bit much as it is now, but I don't think there's a need to tone it down all that much. I don't mind a pop-roid or two in each field, at least the average sized ones. My memory is a bit hazy, but I seem to remember running into them more in the beginning, so either they were toned down during live, or more common in the lower level ore fields, since that's what I was mining early on. Haven't noticed them preventing the clear field bonus, though I haven't put it to the test, but if they are, that needs to be fixed. And they're not all bad. Sometimes you can actually pull a stack from them successfully, at least if you don't get too gready and start with the smaller ones...
  11.
In this day and age, it is hard for some to remember the good ole days of checks, stamps and an envelope. If there is a checking account for the EMU you should be able to send in payments via check.
Doesn't that also cost money if the check isn't sent from the same country the checking account is in?
  12.
have a way to sent check or money orders not just paypal i do not have a credit card because i do not believe in paying someone to let me spend my money. Wht should go out and spend a $100 and pay $110 for it. I would donate every month if i could send a M.O. why make paypal money wher this place could use there part also.I see so much donated less paypal's charge. That money would help also. just a thought
It kind of sucks, but I don't think there's any way to collect donations worldwide for free. Maybe those living close to the country where the bills are being paid could find a way to transfer money for free, but I think the rest is just better off sticking to paypal.
  13. I used the down-time yesterday to set up boinc on my computers. Is anyone setting up an EnB-team?
  14.
/runs off to find out what a boinc "team" is exactly. Once I figure that out, there is a distinct possibility I'd join up. I have been running seti/boinc for ages as i always had faith in the seti project, even if our government lacked it.
I used to run SETI on my computer back in the day when I studied at the university, but I have not had similar programs running on my systems for quite some time. I wouldn't mind running boinc on my computers though, since many of my computers are usually idle for several hours every day.
  15. Did anything ever come out of the friendly pop mob idea?
  16.
Best possible penalty for forfeiting jobs, imho, is a 60 minute cooldown on that job slot. Forfeit one job.. can only take 5 for the next hour. Forfeit 3 jobs, can only take 3 for the next hour. Also, have each job slot individually timed.
Or just lock jobs so you have to wait an hour before you can forfeit a job... Or really only a quarter of an hour would be enough to make taking jobs at random non-beneficial.
  17.
Mining could never be done beyond 2.5K with Prospect 7. Tractor Beam range buffs had no effect on mining, tractor beam speed buffs made mining quicker, since the ores were tractored in faster. Sculptor, Miner, Golden Tooth, Veiled Oyoroi did not affect prospect range with their prospect buffs either, instead they reduce time and energy requirements for mining.
That's true. I even remember suggesting adding a buff to boost mining range back in live, but it got into the game. I guess the devs either thought it was a bad idea, or they had more important things to do...
  18.
Is it just me or does the tractor beam seem too slow at the moment? I recall it being quite a bit quicker than it is in the current implimentation, and then faster again with the correct devices. Anyone else have the same thought? I think it could be sped up by about 50%.
I also thought they were slow compared to live when I first got into the EMU, but I just assumed that was because I didn't have any devices boosting tractor beam speed... I have a couple of hours of low res video captures from live. I could try measuring tractorbeam speed in them. The hard part would be to figure out how much the boost to tractor beam speed was on my different characters back then...
  19.
I think a better thing that making the different gates have different faction requirements, instead make more missions, even if the only award a little faction, that have minimum faction requirements to obtain. Say -3K, neutral, +2K, +5K. Missions being better & more avialable as you improve your faction.
That should be added to the game as well, but if the start is at -9K or what ever it is now, it would be better if the first missions began at -6K or something... A couple of new missions could become available every 1K or so, and missions could be available for a faction interval of 3-4K. It's a lot of work writing that many missions though... If my authoring skills had been a little better, I would have been tempted to volunteer as a NPC faction mission author.
  20.
As to moving things around and story morph etc. Like above..got to get to "live" standards with coding etc. THEN consider tweeks. Given how much Devs have tryed to accomodate folks and try to do things in a fair and most times democratic fashion, I would imagine any changes they make "after live" would take some player imput and votes etc.
I agree with this. Get it working in a "live"-like fashion first, then, when the emu is in it's live phase, start the evolution and move the game forward, both in story-line and gameplay mechanics. The one thing I could see change sooner rather than later is the reputation grind. It takes a lot more time before you get anything out of it than most other systems in the game. The reward at the end (or near the end) is great, but there is really very little incentive along the way. There should be more faction specific easy to find missions along the way with more than just reputation, XP and credits as reward. When it comes to RD-faction for instance, you could also lower the reputation you needed to gain access to BBW, but set different reputation requirements on each gate, so with poor RD faction you can just access for instance the Inverness gate. As you gain reputation, you could gradually gain access to gates in more frequently travelled areas.
  21.
Another option is for the loot that drops off RDs also be dropping off some mobs in BBW/Paramis, if it's too good an item to be in a vendor. That way players still fight for the prints, but having earned RD faction they can fight for them without damaging their RD faction.
In live some RD equipment used to drop from the drones in BBW. I can't remember if the same equipment dropped from other sources. My memory from those days is getting a bit hazy. I don't know what it's like in the EMU either, since I have very poor RD-faction and no high level toon to hunt with.
  22.
Pop rocks are still a work in progress and because of the way asteroid fields are structured right now they will never be quite the same way as live. Not sure it will stay that way but the way the fields work right now is you have to clear all the roids before the field will respawn, after a timer has passed. Back in live asteroid fields respawned gradually.
I've seen fields spawn gradually in the emu too. Could that have been caused by someone else clearing the field and the timer having passed since then?
  23.
IIRC, you started with level 1 beams. You prolly only spent 1 SP to raise that skill to lvl 2. If that is the case it may not be worth the effort to regain a single SP. Just a thought.
On the other hand, the devices necessary to call forward a lvl 2 skill are very cheap, so if you're going through the trouble of calling some other skill forward, you might as well get that one as well while you're at it...
  24. Cloak: If you activate another skill while cloak is powering up, you get a message saying something along the lines of "Another skill is already in use", but the second skill seems to activate anyway, and further more, the ability to fire weapons when you've cloaked (to decloaked) seems to be disabled when you do this, so you have to drop cloak manually before you can fire your weapons. I've only use combat cloak these days, so that's where I've seen it. I don't know if it applies to the other levels of cloak as well.
  25.
Bonus points if you can fix the issue were players sometimes can't target spaced items.
Yes please! It messes up cycling through targets by use of the next target keybind, since it gets stuck when trying to target an untargetable spaced object.
