  1. I rarely play now days but I thought to comment on one of the options... "I had the Betty Ford Clinic for addicted MMO gamers on speed dial for most of the early 2000's..." I fit in that category but scarily enough the ONLY MMO I played at the time was Earth and Beyond... There should probably be an option for "I stayed up longer than 24 hours taking breaks for food playing Earth and Beyond only the entire time." Actually during the last Halloween I think it was more like 48 hours... If you're wondering no I wasn't working at the time lol. Comes with the territory of temporary disabilities.
  2. Got ya Sorry I missed that part even I'm not perfect.
  3. This already happens by default on my system..... Having the last user logged in come up that is.
  4. Hopefully this won't be taken the wrong way... The reason why the ads and charging for additional in game access, credits, or skill points becomes sketchy is because it's too akin to "making a profit" as it's not a clear set donation. Many donation based non-profit organizations do offer gifts to donors. However, without the legal protection of actually being a non-profit corporation this could raise issue with EA. I'm only responding because I've done a small amount of research on it. I'm not saying it's not possible but it would take a good amount of legal research and everyone (not just on this subject but anything in life) should always take into consideration that just because you are within legal bounds does not automatically protect you. The way the US legal system is setup when it comes to entity vs. entity is that you have to have the financial backing to fight for your rights and prove you are within legal bounds. Staying non-profit is a very difficult legal maze to wander through as I'm finding out more and more as I do my own research. A lot of these ideas are great ideas and it will be interesting to see what C_Del incorporates. I wish him the best of luck with this!
  5. Ok I've been debating on chiming in on this part of the conversation for awhile but in some situations devils advocate has to be played. Under the Creative Commons License Net7 does have the right to stop all distribution of materials under that license. So they are not breaking their license. Per this section: In short most Open Source Licenses (and there are many) do not require that the source code be distributed but rather "allow" the source code to be distributed. Now, Creative Commons does not very well address this as it is not an Open Source License but rather a free distribution and alteration license most commonly used for Artwork, films, and literary works. So basically Net7 is not going against their license because it does not require them to distribute but rather allows anyone who is given their works (via http or ftp download, email, or any other form of physical or digital transmittal) to modify and redistribute for non-profit. The full license can be found here: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/legalcode So the debate really isn't if they have violated "their open source license". Who they distribute to after their licensing is not a legal matter but their own decision. They just can't tell anyone who they distributed the source code to what they can do with it as long as the person(s) or organization(s) is not making a profit. I also agree this thread is pretty done with.
  6. You know in reading this it really did get off topic at least from what I can tell. Though most forums posts do. The original topic was about censorship and it's turned into another qa session so with that it might be good to get back on topic. In all honestly it's nice that others interested in our project but we have our own forums, irc, and game server there really is not much purpose in discussing a project which is not partnered with Net7 on Net7's forums. It is on the topic of Earth and Beyond but these forums are for Net7 and the emulator they maintain. (Edited wording was horrible)
  7. Well... hopefully this will make you smile and not frown. I completely understand about people claiming work as their own which is why I made it a point to set aside a folder for a completely unedited version of your guys database and source code. This way there can be a reference if anyone ever wants to know just what parts of our project came from Net7. I'm very big on giving credit where it's due.
  8. The short on this. Which is some of the reasons that team member is no longer on our team.
  9. I don't have time to reply to this whole thread right now if it is still open maybe. One thing I am going to comment on because it severely bothers me. The finger pointing and stating by DEV's or members over here about what our intentions are. Saying that we only exist because we weren't allowed to play in the sandbox is not true and leaves a bad taste in anyone's mouth. Most of the team on our project wasn't even part of the team over here. I myself am very interested in getting the game back to the way it was in live and any new content being added the same way it was in live. I know that many of the other team members on our project feel the very exact way. This is not just a "ruse" as someone put it and is one of the reasons for the proposed joint installer and launcher to connect to both servers. To keep the community together (which is a large part of Earth and Beyond) and allow them without too many problems to wake up in the morning and say "Do I want to play this version or that version today?". I personally would appreciate being shown the same respect I and the current staff on our project show Net7. If you look at the source code we have released no where have we removed Net7's name and even in our new drafting of our terms of use, disclosure and credits we are drafting in credits to Net7. We are not trying to "take credit" for someone else's work. We are doing exactly what Open Source is designed to do. We are building a project off a slightly different ideal based on the original project. I will say that withholding any information needed to run a project the same way the original authors run it is not against open source licensing and it's not against the law. It is against the ideal and spirit that Open Source was based on. (Edited for typo error)
  10. I'm sorry that you see it that way Tienbau. Right now we haven't done much development so there isn't much to share. So, what have we been doing? Getting programmers on board and familiar with the game. They can't code something they don't know what it is. Organizing the SVN and removing code which is no longer used and will not be used by us. Integrating our SVN with our Bug Tracking system before we even start using it. The code will be available and so far everything we have done has been available. So I'm sorry to be posting updates over here but it's the only explanation to your accusation that we are "closed source". Setting up a long term goal project with systems that hopefully won't need much modification as the project grows doesn't happen overnight.
  11. Ok well I've pretty much been the "play nice" sort of person. I hang out on Net7's IRC and help people there when no one from Net7 answers, which is most of the time, to get on Net7's server when in reality I could be grabbing people but you know I have a bit more respect than that. Obviously others don't. I will post this here if it is deleted or modified I will be posting it on our forums. I am part of the Administration team for "the other project". I'm not here to advertise and I won't be posting any links. What I don't appreciate is the bashing going on with no actual evidence. I have been very respectful of Net7's forums and servers and rarely breath a word of "our team's project" over here when I do it's to someone who already knows about it and usually in game pm. However, at this point Net7 by allowing this thread has authorized that discussion so I'd like to set a few things straight. First and foremost we will be keeping things open source and this is one thing that developers from Net7 have approached us about in a negative manner. So much so that the idea we had to possibly keep the community at large together was completely shot down. We approached Net7, specifically David and Tienbau, explained that our goals for the server were different from their's in code and content and that we would like to have a single installer and launcher that would allow the players to log into either server. The best I can say is Net7 doesn't see any benefit in this right now and instead tried to make an ultimatum to us of "do this and we'll think about it". There are many other ways we could have gone about getting players and I personally think we have been very respectful and open minded in working towards what would be best for the community. The accusations that the code was stolen are unfounded, anything open source is exactly that. Wikipedia states the following: From my understanding the Open Source License this code was published under allows modification and redistribution of modified code. We are not collecting donations for "other people's work" all donations have been collected with the understanding that they go towards the development goals we have set for our team. We do have a shortage of donations but we will do what is necessary to keep the project going. I doubt Net7 or whoever started over here started with the big cash support they have now. Rarely does any project start with ideal conditions. I realize people are probably going to bash me for posting this *shrug* I have a bit thicker skin than that. I also realize this very well might get deleted as stated above I'll just post it on our forums if that is the case. I welcome any and all questions which have the intent of finding answers and not just put out there to start a flame war.
  12. This is not a Net7 issue and is not affiliated with Net7. It is honestly not really an issue it was an announcement that was made and in the interested of respecting Net7's forums I will not post any more regarding this matter over here.
  13. This is the reason that certain skills have a "cool down" time where you can only use them once in X amount of seconds or minutes. No reason to change the game mechanics from what they were before. I don't know why people insist that things be "balanced" or changed to be "useful" when the emu is not even fully functional. The goal should be to get all skills, items, sectors, stations, mobs, ores, asteroids, and anything else anyone can think of functional back to the way it was in Live. THEN if tweaks need to be made or things changed that would be the time to do that.
  14. Evilelmo if you haven't received an invite yet try to get one of our officers / recruiters in game as it can be difficult to catch just 1 person online for those of us who might be watching this thread. The following people can send you an invite: Officers: Azasha Latora Mortiaca Caine Cane Diamondgal Easyone Easytodie Easytokill Easytoride Easytwo Junglesoldier Polytrader Satis Satists Traxpp Traxte Traxts Recruiters: Brick Cobraking Levitron Rossdie Nikki Rumrunnerpp Sherlock Spike Takasis Trapper Vortexpp Or just catch any one of our members in space. All of our members will be more than happy to get someone who can invite you to the guild.
  15. I really don't mean this to be rude either but if you spent as much time looking for external resources for Earth and Beyond as you spent on this post you would already know there is a pretty detailed map system that shows the location, level, and type of ores for every system. Edit: And honestly with Level and Asteroid type spelled out for you if you can't deduce from that what exact ores by name drop from there do a little more searching and you'll find a full table from the times of Live of what ores drop at what level in what type of Asteroid. That is if you haven't figured that out by now since it sounds like you've mined plenty.
  16. Yes it does and there are any number of reasons for that. However there is a screen shot up there clearly showing the Landing Clearance message and then docking without registration. I will try to find logs but lord knows how long that would take to go through years of ENB logs *wince*. It may or may not happen simply put. At least not for 1 trivial little thing like auto-registration. I may do it if there are other things the project Team needs in there. So far as I see it there are 3 possibilities: 1. Auto-registration was in Live at some point and was not in Live at some point. (Added / Removed at points) 2. Auto-registration was optional via a slash command like /autoreg (on/off) (probably the most likely fact) I am sure there were more slash commands at the end of Live than were even listed on the website at the end of Live. I searched the archive site and there are patch messages pointing towards an /overflow inventory slash command yet it is not listed anywhere on the website under the commands link and it is not listed in game. EA was the masters of documentation suckery when it came to things they changed.
  17. Internet Archive You can search past websites. I do not know if the Dev / Content team has looked into this website it is very time consuming to go through various versions of a website where links may or may not work and things are sketchy at best. I've been trying to use it to research some of the things that I remember from Live to show "proof" but it really isn't a quick thing. My best suggestion is anyone wishing to look at old versions of websites (including earthandbeyond.com and ebportal.com) dig out your bookmarks and use the living daylights out of your tabs and back button on your browser.
  18. I'll see what I can dig up log file wise..... I'm starting to think this is going to be a never ending debate as no one is going to remember that at this exact date and time they didn't just reg or that it wasn't optional somehow which I'm beginning to think it was.
  19. I said as far as I can remember. It is very possible Tada-O gate raids were still in after the Fishbowl was implemented however, for whatever reason I don't remember attending anything other than Fishbowl raids after the Fishbowl was introduced (this could have simply been because Tada-O held nothing I needed). If you read my post you would understand that right now when a mob does plasma damage you get it in ONE HIT. Meaning that it is very possible the mobs in the Fishbowl that people are complaining about have the correct damage but it does not tick off in smaller amounts like it did in Live. You get it all at once. I don't think people are taking this into account. Also when you have a group with a JE / PS I can guarantee your resistances were buffed FAR beyond anything you would have solo as a warrior. I've recently found with many people venturing into playing the Terran Scout that have never played an explorer before they have no clue these devices even existed because when mentioned they go "oh wow cool I didn't know about those" when anyone who played a PS or JE at high levels and grouped a lot considered them essentials. So again. Before you say that the master couldn't have 1 shot you in Live take all his plasma ticks and add em up. I'll bet he could have if he shot you and it hit all at once because I know for a fact when someone got hit the first time we would pull them out because if we left them in with 1/2 - 3/4 shields and they had been hit by one of the named mobs they would be dead by the 3rd or 4th tick of plasma damage. (Edit) I should probably mention that my Fishbowl experiences have been as a PS, JD, and TT. So I had experience in all of those capacities. Also if a JD was shooting it better have been the secondary JD for that group because I know in the groups I was in it was the JD's sole purpose to summon players taking damage. The reason for this is if the person simply warped back to the TT whatever mob was agro on them would continue to be agro and follow them all the way back to the TT's and enter the reason so many TT's got loads of debt... (2nd Edit) Sorry I also forgot to mention a JD's secondary job was to use that huge scan range and as soon as mobs started coming to the support part of the group the JD would warp off to the other side of the Fishbowl and summon the TT to a new safe spot. Honestly, Fishbowl raids were awesome and fun BUT they kept the players very very very busy and yes lag was horrible your best friends became shortcut keys and forget your mouse unless there was no way to avoid it. (3rd Edit) Keep thinking of something I left out when I re-read my post. I'm not saying that the Dev team should keep the Fishbowl at a 6 group level or that it should be kept so nasty considering plasma damage from mobs is not working correctly. What I am saying is those people who are saying "it wasn't like this in live" need to consider all the factors. The only difference very well may be that plasma damage is not behaving properly.
  20. I might I thought I saved all the data and logs but I haven't been able to find them. However, mind you I haven't looked that hard. They'd be on my backup drive which I'll admit is a total mess not organized in any fashion and 500 gigs of "stuff" from the past 10 years....
  21. Ok, I did tons and tons of FB Raids both public raids and with Merchant Marines. I also did many Tada-O Gate raids and here is the deal. As far as I remember when they put the Fishbowl in they removed the Tada-O gate raid and all items that dropped from the Tada-O gate raid dropped in the FB in addition to the new loot. It took a minimum of 30 very competent and maxed players to complete the FB. The standard was 36 = 6 full groups. The groups HAD TO BE balanced. 1 TT, 1 JD, 1 JS'er (PS/JE), 3 damage dealers (PW/TE/JD). PW and TE were preferred as there was no way to keep a JD alive they would get 1 shot killed. The way it worked is upon gating the JD would warp to the very edge of the sector use a telescopium (or just know where the safe spots are) as far from the mobs as possible. The JD would summon the rest of their group to them. After that the JD, TT, and JE (if not a PS) would stay there the damage dealers would warp out and targets would be called over the raid channel. 1 target to be shot by all groups. As soon as a damage dealer was hit ONCE the JD would summon the person back to the TT and the TT would immediately start recharging. YES L9 shields were 1 shot killed if they were not summoned and healed fast enough. Many of them showed up back at the TT dead at which point the JE would JS them or the PS would come out of the fight and JS them. However, the main reason that I see now why it seems harder is that plasma damage currently in the game (unless it's changed in the last day or so) does NOT tick off it hits all at once. This was the reason players were summoned back on the first hit (which by the way would take 1/2 their shields) if the JD / TT team was fast enough they could catch the person before the 3rd tick and recharge the shields as the ticks went off until the damage was done and then fully repair. On a side note our guild went and did a Fishbowl on Sunday fairly successfully with less than a full group and I don't believe anyone in group was 150. How did they do it? They buckled up and sighed off the initial XP debt and tried different TACTICS. Once the tactic found that worked all went well.
  22. That was after a Fishbowl raid For those who say "the FB is too hard now". That was with 6 full groups 36 people taking it down. (Edit) I wasn't the person with the highest debt either. Debt numbers like that were typical of PS, JE, and TT in the Fishbowl.
  23. Not trying to start a war here but honestly I think the skill was fine in Live. People who spent the nanosecond of brain power found ways to make it quite useful. (Edit) I thought I might add I had a 150+ PS, 2 x 150+ PW, 150+ JE, 2 x 150+ TT, and a 100 or so TE and some various baby chars at the time of Sunset. Due to Sunset announcement I had 2 people who gave me their multiple accounts and I already had 2 accounts of my own so I tinkered with a lot of the classes. Didn't want anyone asking why I'm posting in a PW skill thread without having one. (end edit) In reading a lot of these threads I feel a little bit like I did back in Live. People complain this people complain that I just want to see it that way it was when they pulled the plug on the servers to be honest. When I first started playing Earth and Beyond as a witty bitty Progen Sentinel I heard blasts of "PS's SUCK" "PS's are the most useless thing in this game" "a PS has absolutely no useful skill and can't fight either". Hmmm... well used properly with the brain in the on position I found that my PS maxed out did a lot of things people said it couldn't and even things people said other classes couldn't. Go figure. I found a use for every single skill. Go Figure. People should probably think more, complain less, and think of all the outcomes of changing things before they just up and pop off what they think they want. My biggest complaint? I want to see ENB Emulator an exact replica of the state of ENB right before sunset. Will it happen? Probably not. But I can hope.
  24. Ok here goes.... 2 screenshots for you 1 to show a registration the other that shows an obvious lack of autoreg due to the sequence in which messages were displayed. There are only 2 explanations for this autoreg was not active in Live and I registered at the station before docking or autoreg was optional. Screen Shot with registration: Attached File (wasn't uploaded on the web already) of docking without registration. Please notice that on the first screen shot Landing Clearance was Granted prior to registration so in this shot there should be registration after Landing Clearance if auto registration was not optional.:
  25. Honestly I'm going to add this.... 2 things actually. Record of IP or even MAC address sends you on wild goose chases: person changes ISP , person has dynamic IP (edit blond moment put ISP instead of IP), person gets new computer, person changes network card (due to other one frying), person moves. Secondly making things BOP did not make them have $0 cash value. It was quite the opposite. People would sell looting rights where the person pays to loot the item after the kill or see attached picture (this is not my char I took screens of it for god knows what reason probably the fact someone actually PAID that):
