Mount Conversions for Skill Points (OL 150+)

Recommended Posts

This is an expansion of an idea covered in this post, which might hopefully solve some balance issues brought up.

Items / Quest Rewards: In general, all devices for these quests are unique, non-transferable, non-manufacturable, and cannot be destroyed. They must be in inventory for their effects to be used. Most items are class-only, but not race restricted.

Quests: These quests are named and come in two parts: Part I grants the Lv. 8 item, and Part II grants the upgrade to the Lv. 9 item.

Hitting the Mark (allows the warrior class player to use post-max level skill points to purchase Lv. 8 "Defensor Pacis Princeps" and its Lv. 9 upgrade, the "Defensor Pacis Imperator") Warrior-only. (JD/PW/TE)

-- Speak to [NPC on Friendship 7] to receive a quest... you will need to kill a creature that gives off quite a charge, and contain its essence to build this device. Bring back a Lv. 7 "Contained Voltoi Essence" that [NPC] will use to build your mount convertor...

-- Return to [the NPC] with the Contained Voltoi Essence, and s/he will offer to give you a Lv. 8 "Defensor Pacis Princeps", in exchange for four of your hard earned skill points (the NPC will say that he needs to download your data recorder and get some schematics to make sure it can be handled by someone of your rather limited skills...")

-- Repeat quest when you have 8 skill points... (NPC will stall you with a line like "I am working on another project for you, but need more time" kind of line, until you have 8 more skill points)

-- When engaging NPC for the second time, he will ask for another Contained Voltoi Essence... AND a BlackBox X93 (looted, ripped, or player made, doesn't matter).

-- Upon completing the quest for the second time, the NPC will take your Lv. 8 item, the new Contained Voltoi Essence, and the Lv. 8 BlackBox X93 from your inventory and replace it with the Lv. 9 upgrade, "Defensor Pacis Imperator".

-- Upon successfully scanning the bullyweres, return to [the NPC] who will offer to give you a Lv. 8 "Ginboshi Reactor Array", in exchange for four of your hard earned skill points (the NPC will ask you to "teach him how you managed to get close enough to the bullyweres without being immolated instantly).

-- Repeat quest when you have 8 skill points... (NPC will stall you with a line like "I am working on another project for you, but need more time" kind of line, until you have 8 more skill points)

Veni, Vidi... Vindi? (allows the Tradesman class player to use post-max level skill points to purchase a Lv. 8 "More Fabulous Going Fast Engine" and its Lv. 9 Upgrade, the "Most Fabulous Going Fast Engine") Traders-only. (JT/PP/TT)

-- Speak to [an NPC at Friendship 7] who will ask you to retrieve, loot, buy, or otherwise cajole from someone one Lv. 7 Drone Siphon, used by the Vindis to bridge their ship's engine and ship's control interfaces with those of their drones. [NPC] thinks he can "reverse-engineer this 'doohickey' and make a 'thing-a-jiggy' that will optimize a ship's systems for maximum efficiency. He says he knew someone named Vinny or Vendi who had one of "them thar' efficiency whatchacallits" of their ships along time ago.

-- Loot or buy the Drone Siphon, and return to [the NPC] who after fussing about with his tools, will give you a Lv. 8 More Fabulous Going Fast Engine, in exchange for four of your hard earned skill points (the NPC will push past you and take your ship's datarecorder to get the necessary information - after you complain about it, he'll tell you to "cool your jets...", and then explain that he wants to interface the array with your ship's circuitry)...

-- Unlike the previous quests, you will speak to the NPC again once you've accumulated 8 more skill points. This time, he will refer you to his "fine business partner" [an NPC in one of the Trader Newbie Zones]. Otherwise, he'll just give you the standard nag line like "I have a project for you, but need more time" kind of line, until you have more skill points.

-- Once you've got the second quest and have been steered to the first NPC's "business partner", the new NPC will tell you to scrounge around for another rare part, saying that he also needs a bit of Vindi technology to upgrade your array. He will want you to fetch him a Lv. 7 Biomechanical Langour (again, another drop from Vindi's Ghost Ship)

-- Upon completing the quest for the second time, the NPC will make a bit of a fuss over the poor state of maintenance your ship is in, and take 500,000 credits from your inventory (and the Lv. 8 engine - of course! ) - and she'll give you the Lv. 9 upgrade, a Most Fabulous Going Fast Engine.

Lv. 8 "More Fabulous Going Fast Engine": Tada-O More Fabulous Going Fast Engine is experimental, no more blowing up engine for honourable client. Honorable client can go zippity-fast with this affectionately made engine for increased happiness.

Blackbeard's Final Hour (allows any player with at least +2000 Red Dragon faction to use post-max level skill points to purchase a Lv. 8 "Blackbeard's Treasury", or its Lv. 9 upgrade, "Blackbeard's Hoard")

-- Speak to [an NPC at Paramis Station] who will ask you to bring her 100 sets of Drone Circuits (one stack) OR kill an Advanced Dragon Drone Master (45), or mine 300 units of Aeserium Ore. (You will need to choose one option out of the three from the talk tree: regardless of what you choose, she will chide your decision)

-- Return to [NPC] after completing your chosen objective, and she will then direct you to fly to the Glenn gate in Carpenter sector, where upon arriving at the gate, three Lv. 21 "Red Dragon Tong Delegates" will spawn as a group randomly just outside of the gate gun range, and will proceed directly to Orsini Mining Platform (they do not have anything loaded in their loot table, to discourage players from picking them off, and they do not aggro players... but they will draw aggro from any Chavez Blood Initate gangs, or Centuriata Patrols (lv. 23-25) which of course, will probably spawn in the vicinity of OMP to intercept these delegates. Of course, there is the matter of dealing with any mobs that aggro to you in the process as well. This step practically requires grouping together, and/or use of quick thinking and mob/crowd control tactics. Once the Delegates arrive within 5km of OMP, they will despawn and a message will instruct you to dock at OMP and speak with Shou Tzu.

-- Shou Tzu speaks to you, and regards you more or less as an errand boy - but it is worth the reward of 100,000 credits and faction, as well as the letter he gives you to take back to [NPC]. Naturally, you aren't supposed to read it...

-- Upon returning to [the NPC] at Paramis Station, she will ask you what Shou Tzu had to say (while you hand her the letter). You'll be asked if you read the letter; depending upon your response... you will either receive either the Lv. 8 "Blackbeard's Treasury", or its Lv. 9 upgrade, "Blackbeard's Hoard"

Lv. 8 "Blackbeard's Treasury": An odd charm, personally owned at one time by Captain Teach himself. It is said to possess a healthy dose of Pirate's Luck.

When equipped, this device increase the likelihood of rare and exceptionally rare drops of Level 7-9 items by 50%! (i.e. an item that has a drop rate of 5-10% would then have an increased drop rate of 7%-15% )

Lv. 8 "Blackbeard's Hoard": An odd charm, personally owned at one time by Captain Teach himself. It is said to possess an extraordinary dose of Pirate's Luck.

When equipped, this device increase the likelihood of rare and exceptionally rare drops of Level 7-9 items by 100%! (i.e. an item that has a drop rate of 5-10% would then have an increased drop rate of 10%-20% )

This item is available to everyone.

ENDNOTES

"Blackbeard's Final Hour" - the mission title and its activities seem rather incongruous - but the secret to this is in the letter, which gives some insight into the EnB character "Blackbeard". Of course, reading it for yourself could the outcome - and your reward.

"Kinboshi" and "Ginboshi" are awards, or rather, events in Sumo: When a much-lower-ranked sumo wrestler beats an Ozeki (second highest rank in Sumo) it is called "Ginboshi", or "silver star". These aren't often tracked, but Kinboshi are tracked very closely, because when a rank-and-file sumo wrestler beats a Yokozuna, the top ranked wrestler - that lower ranked wrestler gets an additional salary for the duration of the rest of his career.

"Defensor Pacis" refers to "Defender of the Peace". It was a tract by Marsilius of Padua that laid out an argument for separating the powers of church and state, and for state sovereignty in general.

WOW...

Why are you NOT on the Content team ?????

Very interesting read with more detail than I can assimilate.

I think this would be a very good idea to incorporate into the game, as Post lvl 150 SP's usually go into some skills you are never gonna use.

It will be interesting to see how the general public react to this and whether we could actually add this in into the LIVE server.

Some decent ideas here but a few problems I noticed. Several of the class's couldn't upgrade the items and use them due to racial/class limitation's, no L9 reactors for PS/TS, no L9 shields for JD etc. Perhaps if items were tailored to each class on a case by case basis. Also it seems, to me at least, that extra weapon slots would be much preferable to extra device slots, as a PS I already have 5 device slots and I just don't see a use for more. Five slots is enough for all my essential devices and it only take a few seconds to swap in devices for activated buffs and swap them back out. And the poor JE's can you imagine 8 device slots and only 1 weapon? any JE that would find that useful?

Why not ask for an "I Win!" button instead.

All these posts asking for massive ubar items will only lead to more mobs with way more hit points and resistances that not everyone will be able to accomplish. Then it leads to them whining that they can't experience everything and that leads to nerfs, then more whining and so on and so forth.

Those items are rediculously overpowered.

The shield for starters, it would put the JD at 6 weapon slots, the TW at 7!, and the PW at 8... Also hull patch on a shield for warriors only, what are you on? ;)

The reactor is also stuff of a genius. It being sundari would mean a PS can't use it. And 95% sig reduction on the lvl 9 while the lvl 8 has only 50%??? Also, explorers who already have the least weapon slots will end up with even less - no sane explorer could use this.

Did you just add all buffs you could think of?

More is not always better. Players don't want yet more equipment that has better stats than previous equipment. They want different equipment with different stats giving them the choice to choose equipment that suits their playstyle best.

On the upside the idea of finding a use for that vindis trash is good.

Edit: PS: Shaddex is obviously high :P

Right - can't always catch all the details on the first run of an idea.

Hence the notion of posting it here where it can be discussed

The idea of these items, of course... would lend themselves to combating "legendary content", perhaps lv. 100 mobs (that do not yet exist: who knows if the fishies in the unknown galaxy we refer to as the Fishbowl are but the weaker cousins of the critters further down that particular rabbit hole) ?

And of course, there is always the V'Rix. That L66 H3V2SH3P that was spawn-camping baby Progens coming out of Arx Tiberius in Tarsis sector is likely the vanguard of something much nastier back in V'Rix-space.

And you know how we Humans are: give us an existential threat, and we'll try very hard to take the fight right back to the source. Now picture any number of outsize Lv.150 V'Rix B1TTL2C1RR32RS partied up with massive numbers of minions all healing each other as theywait for somehapless human raiders to drop into their ST1RH3V2.

Coming back to class-race equipment limitations... we could cut out the level 9 items altogether, thereby not creating issues with a TS and a L9 reactor, or Sundari making something that wasn't progen limited. This way, we avoid having a 8-device/1-weapon JE or the other extreme with the PW, and less of the insane buffs all around.

The attempt here, was to make the Explorer classes a bit more uber explorers (sucking those Aeserium 'roids dry a litte faster, etc) and the Warrior classes a bit more uber fighters. Traders are somewhere in the middle, a bit more balanced in weapons and device load-outs, so their max-level skill item was geared to overall systems efficiency (my original draft had the Trader's uber engine giving them a bonus to their build skill, but I recall that there are already several items that give build skill bonuses in the game)

These items, at least in the idea I've been hashing over - are sort of "black market" devices, taking the best of each race (engines from Terrans, reactors from Jenquai, shields from Progen) and making some allowance for using the existing manufacturers.

Sundari may be an institution put together by the Sha'ha'dem, who largely frown upon the Terran money cuture, but who's not to say that some executives at Sundari wouldn't mind shifting some assets tosay, some less than scrupulous Sharim traders, who in turn know this dealer at Friendhip 7 with some pirate connections.... you see where this goes?

You just might wind up with a very small handful of products that are not race-limited.

Of course, we could easily work around this by putting the BlackSun mark on these products.

Further down the line, that particular NPC on Friendship 7 might be revealed to have some knowledge - and connections - regarding the "oncoming storm" (whether it be more fishies or v'rix, or some other yet to be invented menace).

Those items should be toned down a bit, 1-3 useful buffs, 4 at most, is plenty. Now some items with some rarer buffs, for the race, profession, or class for which it's desinged, might be a nice alternative but only 1 or 2 buffs of the "hard to find" variety. Eqipment with average stats, and different buff combos is nice, IMO.

I could also see an item that's intended for all Explorers, Warriors, or Traders (pick one), having 1 buff that each different race finds more useful than the other 2. (3 buffs, 1 favoring the Terran, another favoring the Progen, and a third favoring the Jenquai)

I don't think you could make a JE much better at pulling ores. with the equipment from Live, a JE was already quite capable of emptying asteroids, a Veiled Oyoroi, Cygnus 9, Solar Sail 8, and Prospect 7, is enough to make you have plenty of energy (the challenge is what's guarding the orefield). The Cygnus 9 reactor has good performance, the VO strengthens that reactor performance both cap & recharge, improves Scan (3K or so @200 quality), and gives a prospect buff that puts you to the buff cap, the SS8 provides a Reactor Renewal buff, among other useful buffs, that stacks with the VO's reactor recharge buff. That doesn't include having Navigate, even if you don't max it, and a Laz for warping between roids. Group with a JT (since you give yourself the JE buff of reactor recharge for group), have her cast Reactor Optimization on you, use a Power Augmenter 9, and a Blood of the Dragon, and you'll probably have more energy than you know what to do with. For the abilty to pull ores from asteroids, and find those hidden orefields, the JE is pretty much good to go. Maybe the poor Sentinel should get some love(no that doesn't mean doing "things" with Vinda) in that department though he can use the SS8. The Scout can use the activatable Sundari device (low level ones sold at Jove's Fury) that improves Reactor Recharge, (I can't think of it's name right now) as it's restrictions are Progen Restricted, Explorers Only.

3 weapons & 6 devices on the JE is just fine, I don't think their mounts need to be changed.

I think you hit the nail on the head, so to speak.

As for those V'rix ships in Tarsis, they were for an "end of ST3" event I proposed, till it was scrapped by the rest of the C.Dev Team.

As for why they showed up on the play server, well that was because of a "Database Transfer" that was a bit earlier then planned.

Why not ask for an "I Win!" button instead.

Eeeps. Feeling the resistance on this like 60-grit sandpaper, lol.

The general consensus then, seems to be: "Change... is bad" - particularly when it comes to mucking about with mount points. I can see where having a PW zipping about with 8 weapons or a JE with 8 devices is a bit much.

It might also involve tinkering with the client, which we all know is also a no-no.

Still, I would like to do something with those extra skill points after someone maxes out all his available skills -- and if raising the level cap is definitely not in the cards... then some other semi-uber items would be nice.

So let's say we drop the slot-changing features altogether... but why not have some quested, end-game devices that can be used by any race (reckon we'd have to flag it as a BlackSun device, given the shock and horror of a Progen Sentinel equipping a Sundari reactor) ?

Consider then, class-specific devices (to be clear, class here means either traders, explorers, or warriors) that cap at Lv. 8, so that all races can use it - with slightly better than average stats for that level, and no more than three equipped buffs, and one activated buff?

Unless I was unclear in my posts above, the breakout of these devices would be Explorer gets the reactor, the Trader gets the engine, and the Warrior gets the shield (at no time would anyone have all three special items on the same ship - with the exception of the Pirate loot drop rate+ device, which gets equipped on a device slot)

Short Revision:

Lv. 8 "Defensor Pacis" (Shield) : Unique/Non-Manufacturable/Non-Destructable/Non-Tradable. Warriors only.

-- Impenetrable (Activated) * Drains reactor power completely, but grants 60 sec. of complete invulnerability to user (shields neither drain nor recharge). Draws immense aggro, and has a re-use timer of 720sec (12 minutes).

-- Shield Renewal (Equip)

-- Turbo Weapons (Equip)

-- Improved Critical Targeting (Equip) Passively increases critical hit rate by 35%

Manuf. by BlackSun

Originally commissioned by a rogue Progen Proconsul, this shield seeks to "Defend the Peace" by allowing its user to dominate any and all challengers in the field of battle.

Capacity: 45,500

Recharge Rate: 350/sec

------------------------------

Lv. 8 "Shinden Reactor": Unique/Non-Manufacturable/Non-Destructable/Non-Tradable. Explorers only.

-- Reactor Renewal (Equip)

-- Reactor Core Exposure (Activated) Instantly unloads remaining capacity of reactor to totally recharge all group members' reactors within 2km - at the cost of drawing significant aggro. Re-use timer of 120sec.

-- Reduce Ship Signature (Equip) Reduces Visibility by 2km

-- Improved Psionic Resistance (Equip)

Manuf. by BlackSun

In the argot of outlaw miners and belters, Shinden is "Magnificent Lightning". This reactor will provided even the most grizzled belters great ease in prying free their treasures from the rocks.

Capacity: 4500

Recharge Rate: 90/sec

------------------------------

Lv. 8 "Super Terrific Go Fast Engine": Unique/Non-Manufacturable/Non-Destructable/Non-Tradable. Traders only.

-- Systems Efficiency (Equip) +25% Efficiency and Performance Bonuses to all ship's other equipped systems, and +15% efficiency/performance bonuses to grouped members. Does NOT increase any system's capacity or range (devices/weapons), but will improve rates (increase reactor charge, shield charge, decrease weapon reload times, shorten ability timers, etc.)

-- Decreased Warp Recovery (Equip)

Manuf. by Tada-O

Tada-O Super Terrific Go Fast Engine is experimental, no more blowing up engine for honourable client. Honorable client can go zippity-fast with this affectionately made engine for increased happiness. Tada-O! Big! Strong! Wow!

Thrust: 185

Warp: 4500

Drain: 45

Signature: 500

------------------------------

(Gonna mostly stick to my guns for the Pirate item: ) :P

Lv. 8 "Blackbeard's Hoard": An odd charm, personally owned at one time by Captain Teach himself. It is said to possess an extraordinary dose of Pirate's Luck.

When equipped, this device doubles the likelihood of rare and exceptionally rare drops of Level 7-9 items, and gives another roll for a duplicate drop of a rare item!

Summary:

A large benefit to this would be to players who belong to smaller guilds or non-raiding guilds that might not have the time or resources to camp certain boss spawns 24/7 or coordinate manpower-intensive raids. With the requirements for the quest (Lv. 150, skill points maxed, including those relatively unused skill trees)... these quests would not be something done by Johnny Everyplayer.

I'm not sure you can have a passive affect group members. But the revision does look better on paper. Though the problem with non destroyable is if you get the wrong person that pulls it in they are now stuck with it forever without GM intervention.

I've taken non-destroyable here to mean that it doesn't suffer structural damage/quality damage when the owning ship is incapacitated.

In the more likely case that this trait refers to an inventory status, *in theory*, Explorers should not get the Warrior-only item.

This would involve three different mission paths, and they do not necessarily have to come from the same NPC. I've just taken the liberty here of presuming that there is a bit of programmatic logic that checks a player's job (class) and race when speaking to them.

That is, the same sort of logic used in the default vendor talk trees, where Vendor NPC X will say to Player Y, "Progen are always welcome to my booth. What level 4 components can I interest you in today?"

I'm venturing to guess that there is/are one or two single-bit flags that can be parsed very quickly to determine a player's class and race.

But for fun, we could also move the NPCs around a bit - use one of the NPCs at Charon Station for the Explorer-specific reactor, an NPC at Aganju/61 Cygni for the Warrior-specific shield, and keep the Trader-specific engine mission giver NPC at Friendship 7.

The Pirate item comes from one of the lads at BBW or Paramis Stations.
