DISCLAIMER:
==========================
This is not officially supported by any of the development team.
If you want to do this please make sure you allow the Editor to back up any files that it recommends backing up.
If you run into issues, use the backups that it created to fix the problem. If that doesn't work message me privately on the forums and I will help you fix the problem. Do not message other developers or create tickets about issues that you caused using this tool!
If you run into any bugs with the Editor let me know and I'll update it.
==========================
This tool will work with any of the assets in the game including textures, music, and .W3D assets.
Dependencies:
- .NET 3.5 or higher - Also required by LaunchNet7 so you should have this already.
Instructions
- Download and extract MixEditor.zip (attached to this thread), place it in it's own folder
- Make sure E&B is closed
- Figure out which assets you want to switch out and which mixfile that asset is in (check my post with the list above)
-
Open Mix Editor.exe and go to File -> Open and open a mixfile with an asset you want to replace
- You're looking for "<Earth & Beyond Folder>/Data/client/mixfiles"
- A message will show advising you to create a backup of the mixfile, select Yes
- Now you have a list of the embedded asset files. Look for the asset file that you want to replace (you can sort by name by clicking on the column at the top)
-
Right click the file you want to switch out/customize and click Replace
- Another message will pop up asking you to back up the original asset file, select Yes and save the file somewhere safe
- Next you want to navigate to, and select the file that you want to swap in it's place. The file must be in the same format (mp3 files can only be swapped for other mp3 files, etc)
- You'll get a message that the replace was successful. At this point you can move on to any other assets you wanted to switch out.
Here's a gif video showing me opening a mixfile and switching out a Jenquai track for a Track from Interstellar's OST.
Note that I copied the mixfiles into the tool folder but you don't have to.

Alright, I apologize for the delay; I've had a lot to do and ended up just writing up a new mix editor as quick as I could for you guys.

Any old 2d graphics program should be able to handle texture making for 3d models, or re-texturing old models with higher quality textures. There's also a set of plugins for 3DS max created for Command & Conquer: Renegade that will work for EnB, because they use the exact same game/gfx engine.
Not quite.
EnB uses Westwood's WW3D2 proprietary 3d asset format (.W3D) which does contain 3Ds max-derived structures (hierarchies of pivots with attached meshes); but these files also contain lots of other data including material information, material mapper parameters, shader parameters, references to textures (mostly DDS but some TGA), animations, texture stage data, HLOD data (Used for Level of Detail switching), lights, particle emitters, and a few other things.
Although some tools were developed by the Renegade guys to export the hierarchies from W3D files to their 3DS Max equivilant and back, many of Earth & Beyonds W3Ds are incompatible with these tools in one way or another (some stuff just straight up crashes the tools and others either export, or re-import incorrectly and can cause crashes and many other artefacts) due to changes in the engine that were made for E&B specifically and just changes in the engine from the C&C games to other games.
Creating higher-resolution textures is more simple though; as I said they are just in standard DDS and TGA formats.
I am actively working on creating a series of tools to edit E&Bs 3d assets, including full scenes and aggregate objects (such as stations and player ships), animations, and texturing.
Currently my main tool is able to open any of the game's asset files to render and edit hierarchies (although not perfectly, I'm still working on the renderer), as well as adjust lights, sound objects, emitters, and soon animations. Hierarchies are able to be imported/exported to modeling software which I have created plugins for, although some work with hierarchies must be done in the tool still (such as setting up LOD levels and morphs).

Just a quick update to let you know, if you are still interested in this, that I will be providing a more user-friendly build of one of my mix editors along with instructions on how to switch the music out this weekend, likely tomorrow (Saturday).

-
The version of the WW engine E&B uses supports .mp3, .wav, and .ogg audio, and the game's sound assets are pretty distributed between the various formats.
The in-game music is broken up into a few mp3 files packed into the sound mixfiles ({RegionRace}Wander{ID0}-{ID1}, ex: TerranWander01-1.mp3 packed into mixfile_sound_09).
It is possible to replace this music with your own mp3 files in the mixfiles, but you cannot add additional music that was not already there; you can only replace existing tracks with your own.
To do so you will need a tool that can unpack and repack, or simply edit-in-place the appropriate sound mixfiles. I am hesitant to release my/our tools for this but you may find similar tools in the RenegadeTools pack or other W3D tool packs (although I can't endorse the safety of any of them).
Note: This is completely unsupported by the emulator and the development team. If you break something it is up to you to fix it.
(But if you send me a private message I'm more than happy to help you fix what you broke!)
If you decide to attempt this, please be aware that if an update touches a mixfile that you have edited, you will have to re-apply the change you made to the newly-updated mixfile.

It does not make a difference in this case.

Try this:
Navigate to the EBCONFIG folder:
<E&B Directory>/EBCONFIG
Right click E&BConfig.exe and click properties.
In the compatibility tab, click "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select Window XP (Service Pack 2) in the drop-down menu.
Click Apply then OK, then run E&BConfig.exe as Administrator.

Try following my instructions from this post:

Is any software on your system injecting any type of overlay into the game? (think Overwolf, Discord, TSNative, or any other overlay really). These overlays generally hook into WndProc and, in some cases, can actually crash programs as a result when alt-tabbing and if the UAC (think: Run as Administrator dialog) dialog shows up.

Unfortunately I cannot reproduce this on any of my systems so I am unable to debug this.
If someone is experiencing this problem and knows their way around a debugger then please attach a debugger and try to get the crash to occur and message me the call stack at the time of the crash.

I saw your post in another thread as well -
It looks like you are trying to log in using your forum/net-7 username and password.
Your forum/net-7 login is essentially your "master account". You need to make sure you are logging in using one of your game accounts, which each have their own username and password which is used to log into the game.
You can see which characters are on which game accounts using the Account -> Avatar Transfer page on the portal.
If you forgot the password to one of your game accounts, you can reset it by going to the Account -> Avatar Settings page on the portal, selecting the game account from the dropdown, and clicking Forgot Password.

Kyp ... "content developers" doesn't communicate much to me. There are a profusion of languages, database systems and scripting tools out here. Plus graphic tools. I can't even find a link to which ones EnB uses.
I'm retired and income is fixed plus somewhat scant -- limits my donations. What I do have is time. And a bit of willingness.
Might be that our game could use some added ingame publicity regarding the need for donations, too [when was the donation tracker last updated?] --- what comm channels to us players are available for that?
Content Developers, at least in the Emulator's case, use graphical tools that we have created to add content (such as missions, items, mobs, systems, etc) to the game. No programming experience is required to help out with content development, just the time and willingness.
The Donation Tracker on the forums should be updating in real-time, this is not something that we have to update manually.

Thanks Kyp - but I seem to remember something else. This is the launcher shortcut icon on the desktop. Right now it's "C:\Program Files (x86)\Net-7\bin\LaunchNet7.exe". Maybe I'm confused and thinking of another game or something but I just seem to remember people changing or adding to it for some reason.
I believe what you're recalling is that people used to append "-NoClassRestrictions" to the Character Creator tool in order to create the new classes. This is no longer necessary though as the classes are available in the live client.
Note that you need to use the arrows at the bottom of the Character Creation interface in order to reach them - I still need to deploy the update that adds the buttons to the interface

As Stranks posted, you should point the Launcher to client.exe in the release folder of your E&B installation rather than E&B.exe.
E&B.exe is the old original EA patcher and no longer does anything.

I don't have any ASUS systems or hardware, nor do I have any software from them installed.
Unfortunately it is difficult to identify/resolve conflicts caused by random software; and I do think that it would be strange for your problem to be caused by ASUS software since you did say that it still doesn't work on a clean install (assuming you tried before installing ASUS software).
What software from ASUS do you currently have installed on the system(s) experiencing problems?
-
Welcome to the Emulator!
What is currently happening when you open the Launcher?
Do you receive any error messages or does it just hang while trying to connect upon opening?

<17:46:19> Disconnected from server (server version is too old for command)
Sorry for the inconvenience.
TeamSpeak pushed a client update without backward-compatibility with the 3.1.x servers meaning that people who update to the 3.2.x client will no longer be able to connect to servers that don't have the latest update.
Hopefully we can get the server updated soon so that you'll be able to connect again.

@Cipher thanks for your reply. As per my original post in this thread, I did set compatibility mode to XP with Service Pack 3.. and what happened was it shows up for about a half a second and then disappears. I just tried with compatibility mode set to XP SP2 instead and same thing yet again. To answer your other questions:
- sunrise.net-7.org is indeed the host name I am attempting to connect to.
- Yes, it shows the number of players currently online
- Yes, what is shown in "Local IP" is correctFYI - This is not the first time I have played the ENB emulator. I played it for about a year or so and had no problems. I even installed ENB and the NET-7 launcher multiple times before (after wiping my hard drive to do a complete reinstall). I am not a total noob to this and I am telling you guys something is not right here... this is not one of the normal, easy to solve issues.
And as for Windows System File Checker, I really don't see what good that will do. Look guys, I have told you before that I have installed this on 2 different machines with the exact same results. Something is amiss. If you guys have no clue, I understand... debugging issues like this can be a nuisance, especially when you can't reproduce the problem yourself. Perhaps @Kyp you might wish to have a remote viewing session with TeamViewer at some point. Then you can look at my machine for yourself and help determine what the problem is. I'm in Australia though, so we'd need to organize a time convenient to us both.
My apologies, I was in a bit of a hurry when I saw this thread was updated and didn't have time to properly read through the thread before responding.
Some research shows that exceptions / access violations being thrown directly from wkscli are actually quite rare, but can be caused by Explorer Shell Extensions (you can use ShellExView to see what extensions are enabled) or from security software (Antivirus/malware/etc), which you have stated is disabled.
The fault offset from the E&BConfig error leads us into the _output subroutine of the *printf functions and can't really be used to diagnose the problem without a call stack or trace. (Note that E&BConfig is the original config tool that released with the game, we have no part in creating it and no access to the source code)
You seem to have indicated that this happens for you even if you try installing/running on a clean Windows installation?
-
E&B Config generally needs to have it's compatibility mode set to around Windows XP SP2 for it to run on W8 or later.
To change the Compatibility mode for E&B Config:
- Right click the file
- Click Properties
- Open the Compatibility tab
- Ensure that 'Run this program in compatibility mode' is checked
- Select Windows XP SP2 if available, or Windows Vista if WinXP is not available.
I have a few other questions:
- What is the hostname shown in the Server Host field on the launcher? It should be sunrise.net-7.org
- Does the Launcher show you how many players are online under the Host dropdown?
- Have you verified that your local IP is still correct in the Launcher after reinstalling?
As a side note, I would recommend running the Windows System File Checker:
- Open the Command Prompt w/ Administrator privileges
- Run "sfc /scannow"

So I got a new laptop, and amongst the the things I install on new PC is BOINC. BOINC has an option to install virual box aloing with it, and since I occasionally like to dabble in Linux VM's, I figured I'd install that too.
Shortly after installing Virtual box, the Net-7 loader would no longer get into the game. Instead, It would throw a 'server failed to respond' error before bringing up the login screen. Uninstalling virual box would return the Net-7 loader to normal functionality.
Virtualbox sets up a bunch of virtual network interfaces, possibly this confuses the net-7 loader.
Anyone have any experience with this, or know of a workaournd?
-Zarg.
Ensure that your Local IP is set correctly under 'Debug' on the launcher after installing VirtualBox.
