  1. Yep, I've completely played the MMOs with the pvp toggle. Interesting enough, those games were built from the ground up with the pvp/pve duality in mind.

EnB was designed with pvp seemingly as an afterthought. My only point really is that current class mechanics would probably change and many dislike changes.
  2. Thank you Kyp. We always appreciate your time. The separate rule set would solve many of the issues.

However, I still am only a solo client player. I've been having a hard time dealing with the mindset/culture that if your not multiboxing your doing it wrong. Not saying that what I'm told, just the overtone of many of the community.

I'm simply concerned is all. Often the only other players I see are in a formation with JD, JE, and/or PW at the end of the same name.

I'm not wanting to whine. Just makes me to not want to play when common advice is strap a TT to your side to get more xp.

Listen, I'm not judging, I'm just saying that it makes me not want to play.

    My two cents and opinions.

Thank you again Shadow and Kyp. Please keep up the awesome work.
  3. The thing I find amuzing with the repeated requests for PvP is that more then likely they won't like what happens. Seriously.

I support the idea of having pvp as an option. But need to be honest with yourself. To make PvP viable your class will change.

I get that beating up a AI mob is boring after the x amount of time it's been done, but our classes as far as I know, are balanced around what they bring to the PVE table. Balancing for PvP is far more .... Tricky. (as evidenced in most MMO's that have it).

heck, some modern MMO's design pvp first and pve afterwards.

Will PvP be beneficial to EnB long term. Possibly. Will it create a dead sector? Possibly. Will be gain or lose people. yes to both.

I for one cringe at the thought of someone with enough time to multibox 4 PW, a JE and JD in a group marauding around ganking people. We know that's where it'll end up.

As long a multiboxing (not saying it's wrong, or right. It's just a choice) is a strong part of the EMU culture, no designed function of the game will function properly.

    My opinion.

Thank you Shadow for the excellent reports, I appreciate how well you do the job.

  4. While some of these ideas are radical, and have the potential of bringing things up to modern MMO style of design. You will find that in order to pull off half of what you've proposed, heck maybe only a 3rd of what you've listed, you need to modify the client and how it displays and functions.

At current, that's not going to happen. (unless you rebuild the client from ground up with new models and a different game name).

I understand the passion for the game you enjoy and want it to be at.

However this project belongs to someone else. It's their time and energy that has built this world up. They do it as volunteers. The work your suggesting or some would call demanding would put a full team of coders in a studio to work for at least a year to make sure it was built and balanced properly. We don't have that resource.

I like the passion, however asking for a re-write of things (one issue, or two issues or many issues) is more then likely going to fall on deaf ears. It will be noted, nodded at and if some things are fixable put on the list for review.

My thoughts are, enjoy the game for what it is. A nice MMO that has a solid foundation and excellent ability to tell story. If you want what's listed above. Build it.

  5. EnB was never about the raids. Seriously. It only started moving that way after EA had it and gear wars were popular in everquest to keep populations involved. Westwood built the game to be about exporation and story. Gear was in some cases, an afterthought. (at least in my opinion). EnB died before the modern idea that shiney loot was the mark of status, and 10 years later the largest MMO out there is starting to loose enitre guilds of people who have considered raiding like a second job.

Been part of one of those, not fun. EnB is fun for me cause I can fly around, blast stuff, feel like I'm part of a futuristic timeline. I understand you feel different. But fact is, the modern MMO fan is very abusive to the builders of the worlds we love. Where the passions for the game, and player perceptions of what should be and shouldn't be take a course where players start yelling at the game builders because the world is not they way you would build it.

This game came back from the dead because Kyp and his Crew have sacrificed time from their lives to rebuild a world they were passionate about. They are the creators, they are the story tellers. It's their world. Deal with that reality. If you don't like it, put your skills to work and build a world to go play in that suits what you want.

My thoughts on stomping your feet and demanding change. Look at the WoW forums. Every day there are thousands of people who huff and puff and demand. They don't get what they want. Why should that apply here. I'll recommend a game that is solid, fun and enjoyable. Not one that I load up and have an I win button. See how much fun you have in a console game after you punch in the god codes. Sure you have a blast running around for an hour, or two. Maybe a week after that you leave cause there is no challenge. (eventually everyone drops things that are mind numbing)

To Stanig, Thank you for your time and direct attention here. I appreciate the fact you are tough enough to take on this. I hope you had an awesome summer vacation.

My Final thoughts. It doesn't matter really. You have your opinion, and are entitled to it. But demanding that the mechanics of a game change because you can't get the social aspect of the game to work for you is (in my opinion) very selfish and disrespectful to the people around you. All three Guilds have publicly posted their policys on raids. The GM's have public policy on issues of Kill Stealing etc. If you find people breaking these on purpose, take screen shots and submit them to the GM's.

I suggest reflection, otherwise your not going to enjoy yourself in life. (stomping your feet in a temper tantrum never works)

  6. I'm also curious. However I'm fully aware that the summer months are here. Players, devs, everyone is going to be out enjoying life. And I fully agree they should be.

Activity has reduced. Kyp has put out a call for those wishing to help develop content. That's a great sign that there is work in mind and progress. I hope for new content. I'm not going to demand a set schedule for patches, to do so will only lead to fustration.

It takes quite a few number of hours to make things happen. We can only trust that Kyp and his staff are working towards a progressive and healthy game. But be mindful, the game is a hobby for us to play, and technichly a hobby for the devs.

My opinions only. We can't control anything but our own activity. Don't stress yourself out trying to influence things beyond your control. You'll live longer and happier.

  7. I can see both sides, and can fully support the idea. I've been playing MMOs of one form or another since 1997. I fully see what your saying.

That being said, I have to acknowledge that our biggest limitation isn't the ideas, knowledge or sheer will to make it happen, it's the technology the game was built with.

If I remember correctly, Earth and Beyond was built before or with very early versions the communication tech that allows games like Warcraft to have hundreds if not thousands of people in the same area without the server and client having massive meltdowns. We are fighting some of these ancient mechanics today.

Which brings up just how difficult it would be to implement this idea, since we can only add to the client, and can't chance the code, it would come down to tricking the client to make it happen (making a device to add the effect)

Maybe I've been watching too many Counting Cars episodes. But Earth and Beyond is like a 68 (pick awesome car of choice). You can clean it up,make sure the mechanicals are up to par. Give it a rocket paint job. But that's about it. The resources required to give it all the modern features of a 2014 model of same car just isn't worth the effort,

In the end? I personally prefer the Dev team to expend their resources building content I can chew through at my pace. The extra coincidence suggested would be awesome, but I play EnB for the awesome feelings it gives me. Extra time buffing is a small price to pay. ( Don't forget the automatic buffs just from grouping)

Once again, just my viewpoint. Not a dev or trained as one, but after 15 years of play experience I've realized what is important to game health.

Thanks for reading the wall of text. Good hunting!
  8. Great ideas. Very modern thinking. However, the client would have a bit of a nervous melt down. The group buffs that are intended to happen quick and seamlessly already do.

The skills that are single buff like overcharge, Psi shield , etc are designed and balanced to be choices. You make them mass automated with huge power costs, you risk removing the players choice.

The game is designed for a single player to behind the controls of the ship making the choices. While many of our population use multiboxing tech, it is not intended or supported by the devs. Mass skill useage really only benifits the multiboxer.

The Above is my opinion only. I make my statements about the projects stance on multiboxer tech from their public posts.
  9. Even with the EMU security being up and above par, if only one if the other network clients has lagged in bringing there security up to snuff the network/server cluster can be affected.

Good way to describe it is like a 5 lane highway that can handle 100k cars traveling on it at a time. You start funneling 300k or a million cars an hour everyone suffers. A security hole that allows someone to flood the pathways effects and scatters everyone.

The client was built for dial up connections, and performed well on dsl connections, so it's decently forgiving.
  10. I'm a recently returned played. I played in EnB Origins. I've been fully enjoying the game and the aspect of resurrecting my old mains. So a big thank you the opportunity to do so.

My other half will say that I'm a forum nut. Some days spending more time reading forums then playing. I've noticed some community drama, I won't get into it, but it did get me wondering just much our revs have given us. I was shocked and bow down to their generosity.

If you search the web on average game development salaries in the US, it's around 80k a year. Programmers are averaged around 65k a year. (Check the web yourself.)

If you Average that out, let's say 70k a year for the skills and time needed to put this together. From Kyps posts I'd say an average of 15 members on staff for 7 years. With these assumptions they have given us roughly 7.3 million dollars of game development.

    Think on it. I did.

    Thank you Net-7.!
