Roleplaying Guilds

Randy, et al,

In your absence and many pilots' silence and/or apathy, we have established that both players and staff would like to see the advent of a Roleplaying guild for the further enjoyment of the Earth & Beyond Emulator. We have spoken about the benefits and the hurdles of drumming up interest in roleplaying in a 10-year old game that is packed full of 'grizzled' gamers who as a majority don't care for this level of passionate play. That's fine too. We've covered some of the Getting Started and even put forth a template to sign up and be counted amongst the roleplaying community. Finally, the topic of a central gathering point(s) have been suggested.
I heard much about COH's roleplaying community and how there were even bestseller authors deeply involved in it. It reads like you, Randy want to envision the same spirit here in the Emulator. I'd like to hear more about what details you have in mind, what is actually feasible, and what our server's pilots want out of a roleplaying experience set in the world of Earth & Beyond Emulator. Since your initial posting of this thread, I have thrown in as a correspondent for Net-7 News in hopes of both bringing forth Content, gameworld detail and flavor, entertainment, and game clues to more fun. Yet, still we do not have the numbers of interested pilots to go forward. The interested pilots want to hear more before signing on the dotted line and committing their energies. Fence-sitters are considering but want to hear the advantages of a Roleplaying guild and weigh the pros and cons. And the apathetic pilots could care less, so long as their drops drop and they Win The Game nine times over.
It seems to this pilot and Reporter that what is needed is more details and vision put on the table. Can we expect a full-immersion Roleplaying guild? An in-and-out style of game? Shall we have communications with the non-Roleplaying guilds as we do share the same server and spacelanes with them? Who shall be the leader of such a Roleplaying guild? Can that leader be strong enough to advocate for growth of the concept of actually portraying the toon of the individual pilot's choice? Will the GMs and Development team reciprocate in response to our passionate attention to the game they have created? Some pilots might ask, "Can I portray more than one toon?" What shall we call this Roleplaying guild? Shall we base it off something in story, e.g. SolSec, so that all may feel welcome regardless of race/class? This and many questions more are eating at the keyboards of interested pilots, yes even the ones in the closet.
Since you started this thread, Randy (and anyone else who wants in), can you elaborate on what's to come next? I have contributed a fair amount of suggested actions, places, and given of my time. You game?

Here is one for me…

Name: Vitaes

Race: Jenquai

Class: Explorer

Gender: Male

Homeland: Io

Education: Physics, Mining Engineering, Geology/Geography,
Ancient Earth History

Assigned Duty: Jove’s City

Medical History:

Discovered at an early age that Vitaes suffers from chromesthesia, a form of synesthesia
that perceives musical sound as color. This had the effect of distracting him
from his studies, although, as one can see by his academic achievements, he
seemed to be able to focus enough to excel in his studies. Has an unusually perceptive psionic sense, Otherwise, subject
is in excellent physical health. Subject does enjoy alcohol to excess on
occasion.

Personality:

Subject is a deep, provoking thinker. Seeks knowledge for the sake of knowledge. There
was never a doubt that this was a man born to be Sha’ha’dem. Took to training
very easily. Sometimes gets lost in the art of theory and overlooks the
practical.

Social:

Enjoys time with the ladies, but only those who match his thirst for knowledge. Has managed
to keep good faction status with virtually every race and class in the galaxy.
Is considered to be honest and trustworthy by all.

Skillset:

Curious to a fault, if that is possible for a Sha’ha’dem, his studies in temporal physics
and light properties pushed him to become a master reactor builder, as subject
noted the power requirements of his experimentation. A master explorer beyond
peer. Intimate knowledge of mineral resources throughout the galaxy, as befits
a master mining engineer.

Career:

One of the very few in Jenquai history to attain Grandmaster status with four advance
degrees from the Jenquarum, including the new Geology/Geography
interdisciplinary study. Stepped out on his own to explore and seek knowledge
from all corners of the galaxy. Is an accomplished hand-to-hand combatant: his studies
of ancient Earth led him to investigate the martial arts of Asia,
circa 1400-2000, and is considered expert in two forms of Chinese boxing and
Kung-Fu, art forms long lost except to a few Shinwa, as rumored.

Loyalty:

Absolutely believes in the work Ariad is doing in Antareas, as befits his thirst for
unending knowledge. When Araid needs ores, Vitaes is one of the few she trusts
to mine the neither reaches of Antareas and find what she needs. They have
struck a close, personal platonic friendship. He uses his good faction
standings to further the cause of research and exploration.

Additional notes
(for medical and psychological use only, enter class leader code here to
access: _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ - - _ _ _: Merjan is curious of Vitaes’ close
association with Araid, and wonders if these is an ulterior motive, as Vitaes
has also supported the Seekers’ search for the lost missives of Ben Joseph.
Vitaes is known to be a very independent thinker within his loyalty structure.
Consider this subject one of highest intelligence but one who needs to be
watched carefully in the future. It is suspect that Ariad may use him for
purposes as yet undetermined and unauthorized in the future. Note that subject
also has a Shinwa and Seeker brother.

Seeing as how the RP Guild idea is being placed on the back burner due
to an apparent lack of Pylons or Overlords... I would still like to surround
myself with like individuals who enjoy discussing and playing the game
through our character's eyes. I do monitor the Progen and Explorer
channels but very little if anything is discussed on there. I do try to
keep in character when I can but doing so in the public channels is
difficult. Is there a private channel dedicated for roleplaying? If not
should we start one up?

I'm sure Pakkrat just loves my constant in-character PM's when ever he's

online. I'd love to talk to some of you guys as well despite him wanting to

keep me all to himself. :D :P

I would like to Second the suggestion of Zyrith's, to have or set up a [Roleplayers] channel in-game. /Tell is useful but is one-on-one and can often lead to mistells, spilling unwanted roleplaying onto other channels. Heaven forbid we get Fanboy all over the "grizzled veterans" of the server or be mistaken for a player's opinion or position when we are chatting from the viewpoint of the character.

Furthermore, a sub- sub-Forum for In-character postings from the characters could be fun as long as a set of Guidelines was at the header to give pilots a neutral grounds to put up posts to each other, rather than player to player or player to community. Let there be a community of toons, rather than player-pilots who are "WTB, WTT, LFG, RAID,WTF,BBQ,LOL-ing".

Lastly, in the realm of developing a Roleplaying Guild, I would like to offer up some concepts gleaned from the Earth & Beyond Storyline resource to better aid and give flavor:

1. The time period of the Earth & Beyond storyline is called the Crystal Age. Let me suggest a Roleplaying Guild based on Sol Security (SolSec) in the Crystal Age, where registered (translate: characters with full bio-dossiers) citizens of the SolSec galaxy can meet on common and shared grounds.

2. Expanding on the 'Crystal' of "Crystal Age", may I put forth these Guild ranks: 0 Mote, 1 Sliver, 2 Shard, 3 Lattice, 4 Conduit, 5 Pylon, 6 Geode, 7 Prism (nine of these, one for each class), 8 Focus (three of these, one for each race), and 9 Monolith (the SolSec Guildmaster, sworn to uphold the policies and mission of SolSec).

3. Fun Events: Hunt the Pakkrateus for Credits and Systems: 1st, 2nd,3rd Place. Pin the Buff on the Rat. Trivia Night. News and Gossip from the Galaxy. Auctions and Mutual Growth Saturdays. Hide The Dev Sundays.

4. I Know A Guy: Interactions with non-Roleplayed toons. Nothing wrong there.

5. Connections: Want to tie-in your Roleplayed toon with another's, either current-times or in your backstory? Doable!

6. Hunting, Themeparking, and Raiding. As the Roleplaying Guild grows, this could be a timely and fun activity with story to back it up. Hell, I'll even write a blurb in the sub-sub-Roleplaying Forum and give the event some motivation.

Alas, as I have a busy Real Life(TM), I cannot be the Guildmaster for the above. As in earlier post, I can give impetus, momentum, backdrop, encouragement, and help set up affinities, rewards, and other draws to stepping onto the stage of Roleplaying.

Aye... Due to Real Life™ I cannot commit to anything at this time either as I'm sure is the case with a lot of you.

An ingame channel would probably be the best solution as it takes no commitment and you can interact with the community as you see fit.

Then they can hang out with the likeminded people they've found without worrying about being swarmed by griefers or random vampire succubus catgirl teenagers.[/quote] I'd like to know exactly what is 'grief' about that Space Pirate Anthropomorphic Ninja Catgirl who has been making I Want It eyes at you from across the lounge? Half the folk on this server are lying about their age, location, gender, and other affiliations in their bios anyways. I could be a real rat for all that might frighten you. Welcome to the Internet. Well, I know that I would be completely interested in something of this nature. However my only concern is that if it is something planned by Devs to follow a specific path or setting some of us may end up being stuck inside of a box that we may not do so well with. I tend to avoid absolutes when I RP, and this is for several reasons I won't get into here.

The only things I really have to contribute at this time is that we would indeed be interacting with other Guilds because we all play in the same space lanes, if they have members who want to actually RP then they can as well, but by and large interaction with them would likely be OOC.

Lore is important to Roleplaying as well, however one must also consider that Lore Mongers tend to ruin the ride (unless the break from Lore is just that glaring and makes no sense in so far as even YOU cannot explain it. Period). An RP community will have all types, putting us all into a single Guild may not actually be for the better in this case whereas you get some of the toons I play and they would more or less preffer to be free-lance pilots with loyalties to no one but themselves. Others would work well in an organization.

Anyways, just my two creds on this.

I'm behind the idea for sure, EnB used to have an incredible RP community when I was on Pegasus. Would help the game thrive again I think.

Then my advice at this point is to start with your preferred roleplay toon (s) and register them in the registry thread here in Roleplaying. Then at least you are ready to be In-character even should a Guild never take off. Have a look at other toon concepts there. I think you won't find much that breaks canon or stretches it too far into Disbelief.

I am more and more heartened with each player that declares a desire to start up any degree of roleplay here in the Earth & Beyond Emulator.

I will work out a Bio of the two toons I will be RPing the most, that much is certain.

Now, I DID get an idea from a friend of mine who is a big part of the GW2 RP community. They were saying that with a small RP community it would probably work making a Guild and putting us all in there but attach ranks to the people like "Freelance" or "SolSec Pilot" and that sort of stuff. Sure only people in the Guild would see this, but it would also make sure the RPers would know who was on and when and hopefully do some actual RPing while allowing for the freedom Freelancers want. I think the key there would be Rankings meaning nothing more than just what style of RP you're using.

Enforcer
of the Earth Corps

Name:
Shaelia Vindel (Dislikes her Family name, and tends to dislike those
who use it in association to her)
Class:
Terran Enforcer
Gender:
Female, 26
Homeland:
Born in space, in Aragoth System.
Education:
Learned much of what she knows about space escaping the Red Dragon
Tongs, and escaping from her Parents.

Assigned duty: Shaelia is a drifter within the Earth Corps. She chooses to
call no one place home, preffering to be stationed in random places
as she completes her duties.

Details:
Medical.
<Dossier Entry 2033-458971-4457687 Shaelia Vindel from the desk of
Admiral Herrera: The Medical Staff came to me with this curious
report, or a report they thought was curious rather. A young woan
wanting to be part of Earth Corps Enforcers, not unusual in this day
and age. What they did say was unusual was her mental condition. She
seemed to have an overly cheerful disposition in all areas, like she
enjoyed watching missile flares and smoke trails from her own
launchers as they sought an enemy. According to what they have
written here, it says:

"Shaelia approaches almost all tasks with a fiery energy and a very morbid
curiosity. If given the chance to destroy soemthing, she will do just
that simply to see how it breaks apart as it is exploding. While we
do not believe that Shaelia is entirely mentally stable, she is
certainly gifted in following orders, and seems to actually enjoy not
being around the same people for very long. She might like someone
aboard a station while she is there but the fact she is in the same
place for longer than a few weeks at a time will irritate her as we
have seen in the medical labs while we have studied her and her odd
traits."

DeWynter thinks that this one will be particularily useful to us in some way,
so I am compelled to listen. What I don't understand is what the Red
Dragons want with her and why do I remember hearing her Family name
yet cannot place it?>

Personality.
<Psychological Assessment on 2033-458971-4457687 Shaelia Vindel
for the desk of Admiral Herrera: Shaelia is a go getter. If she is
given orders she will often complete them beyond the scope of what is
given. If ever asked why, her typical reply is "Because I could,
and so I did. And it was fun.". This is how she seems to
approach a lot of things, and while this was indeed caused during her
escape from the clutches of the Red Dragons, some would say that it
does not seem to match the Magnitude of what she says. It is possible
she is not saying everything about those events even now, ten years
later.>

Social.
<Personal notes on 2033-458971-4457687 Shaelia Vindel as seen from
Admiral Herrera: "Ever since this young woman came to the Earth
Corps, she has been making a blazing inferno of both friendships and
enemies alike. It is my best guess that she does not understand many
of the nuances of being human and how to deal with others, and since
she seems to have this mentality of Fast and Fun, Short and
Sweet...it seems to make her a bit of a space-wreck when it comes to
dealing with people for more than a few weeks at a time. She sees no
difference between people from Earth, or the Progen, or even the
Jequai, though she does tend to regard most Traders as little more
than glorified Pirates and has shot at a few. If I ever survive this,
I will see to it that this woman is made an Admiral just to spite
DeWinter for saddeling me with her. Why? Because I can, and at that
point Shaelia would become DeWynter's problem, not mine.>

Skillset.
<Skill and Profession Suggestion Report on 2033-458971-4457687
Shaelia Vindel: Subject excels at dismantling targets and running
away if needed. Subject is, as one might excpect, completely
fascinated with how objects are both assembled and disassembled. It
is suggested that this Subject be given access to build Weaponry and
Engines as they have an aptitude for the required processes. Subject,
however, is more akin to a Pirate Thug. Suggested Profession: Earth
Corps Enforcer.>

Career.
<Thoughts on the uses of 2033-458971-4457687 Shaelia Vindel, as
seen by Lady DeWynter: This one is most certainly unstable, yet I
will not let the Vindel bloodline simply disappear. They have been
too useful to me in the past. This one, however, is a loose Cannon,
and certainly not something I wish to have within InfinitiCorp. From
everything I have read on the reports my Scientists have put
together, she would best be a problem given to the "Good"
Admiral. One thing that does strike me as making this one useful,
however, is their willingness and ability to follow orders,
regardless of whom they come from so lon as that person shows they
are a superior. At least I know she won't go blowing away every
Progen and Jenquai that flies the space lanes. Only the ones she is
told to kill. Perfect for the Earth Corps, and in time perhaps a
perfect pawn should I ever need the Vindels again.>

Corporation/Affiliation.
<Reporting Station 14776785, Zweihander, Earth Corps High Command:
Earth Corps Enforcers, serving to bring safety and peace to the Space
Lanes. Subject 2033-458971-4457687 is not present. Reason for Delay unknown. Last recorded known
location, Main Hangar of Earth Corps High Command. Data File on
Subject states Subject has been given special orders to complete
immediately. Reporting Station 14776785 concludes that Subjects
Current orders are of greater importance than determining Subject
Affiliation at this time. As Subject is following orders given,
assumption is that Subject serves Earth Corps in any and all
capacities.>

Loyalty.
<The matters of loyalty for 2033-458971-4457687 Shaelia Vindel
from the desk of Admiral Herrera: "There is no question that
this one will remain Loyal to Earth Corps at this time. She has
little love for the Pirates out there, and if even possible she has
less love of the Bogeril. Something about them smelling bad and
looking worse, if I remember right. I am concerned, however, if she
is ever given the opportunity to hunt down the Tongs that killed her
Family what direction she would go, and if she went would she come
back? This one may be unstable, but I see promise in her that one
does not see every day. Not ever since InfinitiCorp started running
the show.">

Secret
Details: <From the desk of Lady DeWynter on the Vindel Family
Line: We'd thought them all dead, but it just goes to show you that
sometimes you can be surprised. I was hoping the Tongs would kill off
this bloodline, but since the daughter still lives I may be able to
use her. She knew her parents operations well, and I could use that
especially if it means pitting the other Pirates against the Dragons.
I can use this one, and if she turns out to be less than cooperative
I can have her sent to Aganju...or better yet, Earth Corps. At least
there she would be directly useful to us, protecting our shipments.> Edited by Torren

Curving slightly back around to the private channel idea - although they are not persistent, we could join when we log on.  That way if any RPers are already on and you join the PC, you can chat.  I was seeing if we could select what channel number we joined, but it does not seem to be possible.  Anyone know how often private channels are used?  It could be very well that channel 100 (first one) ends up being what we are on the most.

The Private channels are rarely used.  Though it is a chore to set up a Private channel and not every RPer is currently going to assume one is active when they log on, it's currently the only option.  I'd much prefer a persisitent check-box channel, but that might require unauthorized changes to the chat system.

I'd hug you for that, but all I end up doing is hugging my monitor instead :/

Thanks Zackman!

EDIT: It might have helped to ask how one accesses this channel though, as I cannot locate it by any normal means. I know its not a checkbox though, you've said as much Zackman.

To post in the new [Roleplayers] channel, add /rp before your text in any other channel. It will tell the server to divert it to the yellow [Roleplayers] channel.

If you are a plebeian and not a thespian, type /rpoff so you will not be bothered by the growing number of in-character chat posts from the galaxy.

The Roleplaying community thanks Zackman for adding this new and exciting option for pilots to truly immerse themselves in the Earth & Beyond galaxy, leaving behind the crunch, ubercentricity, and drama of players. They will become pilots in spirit as well.

Let us continue to be civil as citizens of the galaxy under SolSec unity or in the spirit of freelance liberation from all the ideologies of individual racial and governmental agenda.

Advertise your wares, if you must, in-character. Services too. Roleplayers the galaxy over would love to hear your take on current affairs and reactions to recent events, news, and the like from your roleplaying toon's perspective.

AS the two channels are near enough in color, please do not think I, as your Anchor-rat for Net-7 News am posting the newsblurbs in [Roleplayers]. However, do feel free to react to the news in-character in [Roleplayers] and out-of-character in [General]. It would greatly flavor the game for pilots to have their say in return.

The new [Roleplayers] channel adds a new and exponentially more-fun element to the Earth & Beyond Emulator. Let the game-Winners sit on the sidelines and watch as we enjoy the society and interactions pilot-to-pilot. Finally, be on the lookout for toons that might post only in the new channel. Those toons may be Dev moles, GM agents, Net-7 News undercover correspondents. Who knows what they are up to?

I use [Roleplaying] to advertise, in-character the Sabine Order's claim to fame, the Call Forward, rather than in Market where I generally get teased. This way, a pilot rather than a player can respond with a need for the service. From the Doctor's office at NET-7 SOL, this is the Pakkrat.

The KDA is open and welcomes any and all Role Players/Pilots for Hire.

We are more or less simply a gathering place for Role Players to be so we can see who is online and just shoot the breeze with one another as we plan events and the like. Role Playing in Guild channel is also not discouraged.

If you are interested just message me in game on any of my signature toons and I will invite you in.

EDIT 06/17/2013: It would seem that due to other factors (real life) I have not been as active in Emu as I would like. I won't be recruiting anyone for the time being. I will make sure everyone knows when this changes though.
