Popular Post Zackman [LDEV]
Wow its still down, pretty poor system of dealing with crash this is really un organized. there should be a crash detection like any other private server program. if the devs want a unmanned system like this they need to have a way for people to get ahold of them so this can be dealt with. Once upon a time.... there were a few nerds grouping and starting to do something very crazy: "Hey, our beloved Earth & Beyond is dead...let's revive it and code an emulator"L O L !! But wait...they really started it!! They spent month figuring out the 512byte RSA encryption (took month). They started spending night and day coding. They were a thousand times at a point cancelling it, because there were problems almost not to solve. They got trouble with their families spending 23h in front of the computer. They got trouble with their jobs, doing "things" not job related while in the office. They founded a "non profit organisation" dealing with a lot(!) of "official crap". There was a day when the ship suddenly started moving. WOOOOOOOOOOTT!!!!!!! They suddenly got mobs in the game, also moving....(woot) The game proceeded, new functions started working over the years! Servers were rent, costs produced. Donations should cover these costs, but they didnt all time....a lot of money was spent by the project founders. Private money! When they started, their babies were born. When the Emulator went live, their "babies" started going to school (first day)! Today you are playing this game with a lot (LOT) more functionality than ever. You dont pay for it, you dont need to sacrifice anything, you simply come here and play. I joined the team ago 7 month, spent a few thousand hours so far (thousands!). We all (the whole team) are spending a lot of time for "our love" (EnB). You say there is a bug? We fix it (always): You say this isnt working as it should? We change it (mostly). You say it would be cool to <XY>? We implement it (often). But...and i want you to sit now because this is the hard hitting, cold hearted, naked truth: Some of us are...(dang im afraid to name it)....some of us.....are.....SLEEPING OR WORKING! DOH...i said it.NOW go back and read your poor(!), selfish comments. Feel ashamed now? You should. Hey, why dont you (yes YOU) send 25.000,- $$ RIGHT NOW so we can hire a veteran for 2K~/month just sitting in front of the server pressing the button to serve your thought of "organization"? Or you keep the money...and the piehole shut, you little unthankful brat ( :P ). Ok, now i get my coffee (just woke up and restarted server even before having my morning toilet and coffee). Restarting.

Woodstock HGM [HGM]
I think the restart fixed a few of my issues, i was playing most of the day, but i couldn't get the GMTools to work re-installed a few times, the tools kept crashing no matter what i did, Thanks Zack
garyonut
Well said Zackman if they don't like the way it is run and want to complain about something they get for free let them go play another game that they pay money to play and then they have the right to bitch. I am just happy to be able to play this game that I truly love and thought was gone forever but for you kind souls that have brought joy back to me so I say great job and THANK YOU.
Xpo
The REALL free to play concept is hard to grasp for some people. Be thankfull for what is given, support what is done and be mature when things dont work correctly at times.
Popular Post Searing
Just fo a bit of context....I found the project in Spring of 1987 I think it was ..Evermore I think found the project around the same time. I (not being a programmer and not knowing any better) had saved all my files from beta test EnB original to the last nite in 2004 when orig EnB shut down....it was my hope that someday somehow somebody ..would program some small APP that I hoped would allow me to at least fly around in game on my own computer and reminisce at least about the 'lost' game Earth and Beyond So doing a google search I found the EnB emulator project and "gasp" they had ...dare I dream...a "SINGLE PLAYER VERSION OF THE ACTUAL GAME' you could fly around in and use commands and actually do stuff....I was in heaven.... Then reading further on I saw they actually we're working on a SERVER......I was dumb founded... So Jan 1st of 2008 I think it was the first Stress Test was up for the server and lots of folks tried it (it promptly died) but fun was had by all ....my computer tried to kill me (you can ask others about this they were in TS at the time ...a/c brick kept heating up and shorting out)... So keep in mind we have gone from ST1 to LIVE in 5yrs almost exactly....the project in background mode was probably 2 or 3 years before that..there are inactive DEV's on this game who all they ever did was type stuff from prima guide and other sources into EXCEL spreadsheets...shudder anyway consider the distance traveled and also the fact to the best of my knowledge this is by far the largest working MMORPG Free emulator project that has ever managed to actually hang together and work to get a a LIVE version.... most of these kinda pie in the sky naïve (sorry who ever thought we could do this was deluded ...I mean it worked but back in the day you the founders of this were deluded..no hard feelings but..really) so play the game and to the best of my knowledge all the people involved donating time and effort will try to keep it afloat....and free and the server up etc but in case you have not figured it out yet ......THIS IS HARD...... i'll end it on that note Searing
TooTall
Zackman you hit the nail right on the head! I found this project in May 2008 and helped beta test and develop (more like remember) content and do my small part to get this wonderful game back. And I play the game waaaaaaayy too much ^_^ There is much more than meets the eye here, be aware of that when you make your "helpful" little observations <_<
nmlss2013
Nope. Sorry Zackman. That is what is called a copout. And a bad one. What has been done is indubitably a lot of work. But. But, the game exists because of the community around it, right? Right. Therefore, just as you always fix bugs (nope, sorry) and listen to the players when they tell you there are things to be changed (nope, sorry), then it's equally your responsibility as devs to keep the community informed. Don't tell me it takes too much time to make a four line post 'we're on it, we're fixing it'. And don't tell me 'there's something wrong but we can't go into details' is defensible, either - as a matter of fact, it's particularly bad. As to 'we're all busy doing other things', well, perhaps then it's time to recruit other people so as to share the load and have a reasonable 24/7 coverage. As to the fact that 'the game is free and we should be grateful whatever we get', see above. Once you build a community around a project there are standards of behaviour which one really should adhere to. Not tell people 'we should be ashamed of ourselves' when noone spent ONE QUARTER of the time you spent writing your post in composing a quick note 'folks, X happened, Y is working on it, ETA is Z hours'. Since you talk about reprehensible attitudes, right back at you, kind sir. Does this make me an ungrateful sod? I'm sure I will be called as much. And I'm sure someone will question what I know of supporting a community. I have some first hand knowledge. And made damn sure that how no matter how much I got pissed when users were pushing my buttons, I kept my side of the bargain up, which was to treat the project as a work project, out of respect for all the people who contributed something to the community. Which is why, I freely admit, I'm no longer involved. I no longer have the time, though I must say I was never able to devote thousands of hours in a 7 month period to anything. Something funny to do with the way I count.
nmlss2013
Oh and, TooTall, 'there is way more than meets the eye': great, could you or someone please explain? As far as I know no NDA with EA was signed, so there is no reason not to have full disclosure. Enlighten us players, it'll be a service to everyone, I'm sure.
Minigil
Once upon a time.... Restarting. Just fo a bit of context.. Searing I love you guys. Thanks for this. I have a family of four with a fith on the way. Played this game back when I was 19. Can't afford to pay to play online anymore. I look forward to this game every free chance I get. Stoop
Once upon a time.... would vote this up a million times over if possible! Thank you to all the DEVs and staff for sacrificing so much of your lives to bringing life back to this game :D Edited April 14, 2013 by Dakynos removed long quote
GenghisBob
I think the problem is that some people think there should be someone to reboot the game (or at least let them that they are aware) 24/7. They think that this is a job, not a labor of love. If you think someone should be available 'all the time', then volunteer to take a shift. And, you are wrong, this game would be here without the community. They built it before there was a community. It certainly is for fun with the community and I'm sure the devs and others get more satisfaction when there is a large community. But, the fact is, there is NOT someone on-line 24 hours a day.

nmlss2013
So I get called a troll and part of the problem, but once again, clarity is not provided. That's OK, I can draw my own conclusions: it's pretty evident that we operate in very, very different ways. I won't disturb anyone further, promised.
