yeah I don't think the client allows us to have such high resolution models, although it's possible that's due to bandwidth restrictions at the time ... may be able to get higher resolution models working now. I'm not sure what format the spheremaps are in. It would certainly be interesting trying to feed higher resolution ones in to see what happens.

I was actually thinking that there may be an easy way to improve the look of ENB with out greating graphics all over.
I noticed three major issues with the planets in game.

The first is they are stretched.
The second is the background causes issues with the bloom - Atmosphere (edging) effects.
The nebula's of various systems are very overdone, and the coloring is poor.

The solution to the first may be just to resize the model (to a smaller model).
The solution to the second may be just new background to a Background that has less nebula effects.
The solution to the third may be to change the background.

I made some concept backgrounds.

ok. I'll have a look - I bet someone's already checked this out to get new planet maps, but you never know. I would be very surprised if the maps weren't in some standard format.

The static backdrops I know will be easy to change if we need to - the point is whether or not they'll support a higher resolution.

these are stored as w3d files.

If you want to practice, create your .w3d spheremap and call it plt07a.w3d, placing the file in \earth and beyond\data\client\art

This is Uranus's spheremap, so replace the .w3d and visit uranus sector to check on your work. It will only be visible to you until an official patch goes through.

I don't know any details about the .w3d format, but you can examine the existing one by using the XCC 'mixer' and extract plt07a.w3d from one of the mix files, I think it was in mixfile_art_03.mix

I will post up instructions for creating new skybox files for the sectors tomorrow. It is looking like the client won't accept higher resolution skyboxes, but I haven't yet tried everything I can think of, so it's still possible that we can get nicer looking backgrounds working.

For the spheremaps I don't know if you'll be able to get better ones or not ... just have to wait and see.

Textures should not be a big problem. What we can do to get the planets in game is you need to make a circle that is flat (yes I said flat) and basicly you make the textures move accross it to make it look like it is round. That is what they did in the live game.
