Pages may load VERY slow. Worth the wait. Heres some clips from the IRC chat. <Cerdith> We had a big huge wonderful story ... you got like 40 pages of excerpts from it. <Cerdith> We started with that ... <Cerdith> (But it was closer to 200) <Cerdith> And we thought, ... very cool, where does the game story start? Cause that determines what is backstory and what is to come in the evolution of the story in game. <Cerdith> And that starting point changed over and over ... before the content designers were ever hired ... <Cerdith> Because there is/was a lot of pressure from different groups within the company. <Cerdith> So, for instance ... one group might think the game is better if it starts with a war <Cerdith> Another group might think it's better if it starts with tension ... but not outright hostility ... <Cerdith> Another group might think players will be more engaged and interested in "defending" something if they've had time to make it their own... <Cerdith> So, somewhere well above your average designer or even producer ... these debates will rage. <Cerdith> In the meantime you have a huge huge document with lots of scope ... <Cerdith> Enough in there for lots of games ... <Cerdith> And someone important enough makes a decision and says ... it starts THERE. <Cerdith> And then content starts figuring out what that means. What is in the game at launch, what is the story from then on... <Cerdith> Community starts to say .. "cool we can post backstory" <Cerdith> And then... WHAM! some other importnant person says ... Wait.. no, change it. <Cerdith> And then, we can't post anything, cause ... what if we post something that never happened, or is going to happen? You want to talk circular time? <Cerdith> So ... now, we have a shipping deadline, right? Everyone understands games are an industry. <Cerdith> There's a rate at which money is being burned in development <Cerdith> And there's a budget <Cerdith> So "ship the game" is something that becomes paramount. <Cerdith> People are doing huge hours ... and then bam! We have to reduce scope... reduce scope... <Cerdith> So, where did the planets and systems go? <Cerdith> Well, they got scope reduced. <Cerdith> Why weren't they mentioned? <Cerdith> Cuase we hoped to add them in later <Cerdith> And if we mentioned them, we coudn't. <Cerdith> Or ... worse, if we mentioned them, we'd be told we promised to put them in <Cerdith> And crucified for not doing so. <Cerdith> Right? <Cerdith> So, now we launch ... <Cerdith> And we're scrambling to fix stuff ... <Cerdith> And "pressure" is coming from a lot of place, including players ... but also within the company ... <Cerdith> So we add all sorts of stuff ... PVP and new skills ... <Cerdith> Do we want to do the story? Yup. <Cerdith> But, priorities aren't always set by the dev team. <Cerdith> (And thats about as much as I can say there) Edited May 16, 2011 by Spotlore
Tienbau
A stone circle on an asteroid in space? Who could have left it there? Why was it built? What would happen if it were disturbed?
