Microsoft buys Github

Recommended Posts

Just a hint in case you are hosting projects with Github:

When MS (known in the past for "reusing" code from others) buys Github, i would run...aka:

I would remove my code from Github asap, before i find it again in some MS products later...

Seems that a lot of people are jumping ship and headed for GitLab and one or two others. I think I'll do the same.

For what it's worth, GitLab has a feature to automagically migrate your GitHub repos over to GitLab.

Its not that grim. If you have open source project there, you have a license that allows others to use your code. License terms apply.

All my projects there have AGPL/LGPL license.

Private repos are obviously different. You can push GPL code there and there is no legal way for Microsoft/Github to get access to it

The issue seems that people are afraid that Microsoft is integrating everything to their ecosystem and removing all other options, ie allowing github api only from azure.

I work hand in hand with them all the time and have spent the last 3 months on site with MS Consulting. I would only say these given conversations we've had on this subject. Microsoft is trying to move toward embracing of open-source platforms/services in conjunction w/ Windows 10 and Server 2016/2019.

I get the concern, but MS is also one of the few companies in the U.S. REady and planning to follow GDPR and even make the privacy protections the same for U.S. users. Or at least so they're told from the management of course.
