  1. How about a quota that rises with the user level? Noobs get 500K, users get 2-4MB, advanced users get 10MB or so, and correspondingly higher amounts when higher ranks are achieved? Also, if a post's attachment is made available in the download section, the user should get that item's file size credited back, so they can contribute more useful material directly to the website. That way, our information won't be locked up forever. Also, if we want to update something, it would be good if we could remove the item [freeing up allowance] and post something different. One way to keep the storage capacity of the website manageable would be to have an *UPLOAD SECTION*. Each user would still have a limit, but when their uploads were reviewed, they would either be deleted or accepted & moved to the appropriate section. Either way, the size of the upload would be credited back to the person's account (hopefully, automatically). The web admins could even award points based on how good (positive points) or bad (negative points) the upload was. If your account reaches a certain negative threshold, you won't be able to upload. However, information that's merely a duplication of that found elsewhere here (but on-topic), should be given 0 to 1 point. Don't penalize folks for sending something they think is useful. Sorry for rambling a bit, but I'm not quite with it at the moment.

    PvP

Definately! If the PvPers are squirreled away (1) hopefully on a completely different server or (2) in an area where a PvEer has no need / reason to enter, that'd be OK. Have the gates to PvP areas color coded differently or name the sectors like "Hydraxia-PvP" or something. I don't want subtle clues... I want big warning signs. A PvP flagging system would be highly useful. If I don't flag myself, I can neither be harmed by, nor can I harm another. This way, if I stumbled into a PvP area, I'd be safe as long as I diddn't flag for PvP. This could be (on the user side) as simple as /pvp [on, off]. That way the PvPers can get their jollies and I can enjoy the game without worrying about some twit blowing me apart. We have enough to worry about with monsters, thank you very much.
  3. From what I've heard in General chat 1 passive and 1 activated item will stack for each effect. That's the only item stacking, unless there's been some changes very recently. I think buffs from other players (and the occasional buff from killing a monster in some instances) will all stack. Unless the devs change their minds, I think this will be the permanent behavior. Ask in General chat when you're logged in or (if you have broadband) fire up teamspeak 3 & log in.
  4. Working flawlessly for me on Win XP service pack 2.
  5. I just successfully logged on & off the server. It's Jan 13th @ 1547 Central (GMT -6) 3:47 P.M. Why a simple database restore should take almost a day is beyond me. It should've been a half hour operation... TOPS!
  6. I just successfully logged in & out of the server. It's up & running as of Jan 13th, 1542 Central (GMT -6) 2142 GMT. The Net-7 launcher has a little status box that's centered with respect to left & right & about 1/3rd of the way down from the top. It'll say either "Offline" or "Online -xxx" with xxx being the number of people on (not startup time).

    PvP

Other than the arena, PvP has *NO PLACE* in Earth & Beyond. PvP has poisoned many games and brings on an entire set of balance issues that are just not needed. PvP causes more whining when one class has a small advantage or people are too lazy to learn how to use thieir abilities to the fullest. Some classes are supposed to be better at combat than others. Going PvP would require nerfing warrior classes or super-charging explorer classes. Rather than having strengths & weaknesses that can be offset by grouping with members of different races & classes, we would all become rather similar in our abilities. Acquiring uber gear should make one's life easier, not be the thin edge that determines survival. There are plenty of games that feature PvP out there. Even World of Warcraft™ recognized that not everyone is into PvP, and have servers where people can opt out of that entirely. The ENTIRE PREMISE of this game is about working together and helping each other out. It's about having fun, socializing, and sharing information. This is not about capturing territory & building empires. While personal power & fortunes can indeed be amassed, they enable generosity, rather than having to be carefully guarded against all comers. While friendly competitions can be fun (who can get to x level, who can amass y credits first, who can get a specific amount of a type of ore mined first, etc), they do not generally create ill will between players. If a large chunk of the players want a PvP server, then they can wait until we get PvE straightend (?spelling?) out. Without the PvE part of the game working properly, there will be no dev time to work on PvP. Realize that we're in ALPHA testing now. We haven't even gotten everything working yet. Any work on PvP would probably have to come *AFTER* the game goes live, which will be after Beta, and possibly Gamma testing! Other than the Arena, don't expect to see PvP anytime soon. I don't know what the dev's tentative schedules for implimentation of different aspects are, but their work on new stuff gets pushed aside every time they have to fix a problem. They're having to re-create everything from scratch. They're having to spend time to develop tools to deal with issues. This is a learning process for everyone. Be patient, because these developers are working FOR FREE. Because of donations from people, the only benefit they get is they're no longer having to pay for the direct costs of running the server [electricity, bandwidth, hardware, backup media, etc]. Their time is very valueable & under-appreciated.
  8. Awesome name! Remember: If it says Intel Inside, then there's an increased likelihood of Idiot Outside!

    Defeat the evil Win/Tel!

  9. Go forth. Eat Cake. Have a happy birthday with someone you love!

  10. Happy Birthday! Have a very merry one & may you spend it with your loved one in your birthday suits!

  11. I want to put in my $0.02 as well. I am very, very thankful that the devs are continuing to work their keisters off! We're all deeply indebted to them for resurrecting this phoenix from the ashes (UNLIKE the piles of ash who should be buried in holes that killed it)! Losing 2 days of work is no biggie. This just highlights one reason the stress test is needed... find out what kind of problems can come up & learn to fix them. Now the devs know that they need to find a way to do a search & replace (with confirm) on the user database (hopefully clearing the 'deleted' flag from the data or some such). Opening up a current and a recent copy of the database, conmparing them, and showing records that met certain criteria would allow an effecient method of narrowing down the list of people without having to manually compare every record. Multi monitor setups for this kind of thing are highly recommended. It was wierd for a poll to be taken and then a rollback announced while the poll disappeared from the website. It's also strange that it diddn't run for at least 24 hours, but these are minor concerns. Overall, the team gets an "A". Everyone makes mistakes & has to learn... and ultimately this is an ALPHA stress test. We know we're going to have toon wipes & lose things eventually. It is frustrating for those who went after rare drops or completed arduous tasks during the past 2 days, but such is life. These things will be happening when we wipe. It's the love of the game & the joy of interacting with others... even devs... that sets this game apart. Actually getting one-on-one help when you're in trouble is rare in a MMO. The DEVs aren't perfect, but they're exceedingly good. They're learning just like we are. Nobody likes it when crap happens, but this is a game, it's not real life. We know it's *better* than real life, and wish we could move.
  12. 2) The chickens are alive (until impact), so they're stuffed with their internal organs. 3) The question is whether or not the *TREES* in the forest will care. 4) <LOL>
  13. How many missions can we have active before one becomes hidden? Knowing this would help us self-monitor until the devs can address the issue.
  14. I think a good rule of thumb on whether or not to include a mob or ore spawn or other thing would be whether or not it's near an obvious nav point. If whatever is right by a normal nav point, then include it in public information. If not, gather up the information and share it with guildies as they need it. It can be very frustrating when a builder needs a specific ore and you have no clue where to find it. On the flip side, handing everthing out would ruin the enjoyment of exploration and give folks less reason to interact with others... and interacting with our fellow players is what makes MMO's fun! Without fellow players, even a game as awesome as E&B could get boring after a while. True, it might take a few years of solo play, but eventually, we'd kick it to the curb without others to interact with. There is one item that, personally, I'd love to see, but is a bit controversial: a complete galaxy map. My own navigational skills are horrendous, and my cartographic ones are even worse. While I don't mind not having maps for all the sectors, I WOULD like a galaxy map, so I have at least an idea of which direction to head. If the full connections between everything are deemed too much of a spoiler, it would be nice if there were a list of all of the zones in a system (name only), as well as the names of all the hidden zones & systems. That way, you could use it as a check-off list instead of spending thousands of hours trying to find more hidden gates when you've found them all.
  15. While it would suck too much development time to concurrently work on single and mutiplayer issues, it would be cool to have an old client & single-player server available so that E&B can be shown *WHEREVER*! Want to interest a co-worker or underling in E&B but you don't have internet access at work? Bring this! An old client (with compatable character generator) & single-player server would be really cool tools to actually SHOW someone what it looks like... and let them know that the project is ongoing & improving! Having an archive section in the download area would rock. This way we could play E&B while the servers are down [or a character rollback is in progress] or whatever!
  16. Happy Birthday to you! Here's hoping you have a sexy someone so you can both enjoy each other in proper attire... birthday suits!

  17. This is a minor issue that can be addressed after we go live... which is after we go to beta testing. It would be cool to know the total size of the files that need to be updated, and have a progress bar for them, for those few of us who are still cursed with dial-up... or worse [like me] not even full speed dialup [31.2K to 33.6K connects... WAY rural... darnit!]. Most of the files that have been updated have been art files [or at least they had art in part of their filename], so my guess is that some graphics artists have been busy. I've also seen some initialization (*.ini) files updated, so presumably some defaults or data for areas have been tweaked. A human description of the changes would be cool though.
  18. 2 or 3 comps running seems reasonable to me, but I agree that using 3+ for group activites is bad. If you want to have 1 builder sitting somewhere and have a miner and an ore holder / combat toon out mining resources / items for him, that shouldn't be a problem. I see almost no reason to have macros in the game at all. If you want to run multiple toons, do the work yourself. Want to play while you're away, that's just wrong. You can't work while you're not at work, so why should you be rewarded while you're not there. The *ONLY* reason I could see macros would be for a person with moderate to severe physical disabilities to be able to enjoy the game. Other than that, either learn how to type & just play the game and not try & juggle instant messaging, twitter, etc, etc while playing it. With the sole exception for the handicapped, macros are just ways of being lazy. If you're severely uncoordinated or have movement issues, there is always teamspeak / ventrilo. Physically impared and have a speech impediment (I have a friend that fits this category)? My heart goes out to you, but other than allowing macros & possible 3rd party program interaction with a client for you, I'm not aware of any technology available that would allow you to be competitve, though E&B is not a competitve game by nature. If mere enjoyment of the universe & socialzation with friends is the goal, then that can be arranged. If we get to Shadowrun technology where you can jack into the computer, then at first [when not everyone has it], only handicapped folks should be allowed to jack in, and their natural advantage lowered to be about equal to a good player. Once jacking in becomes ubiquitous, then bots & multiple boxes are no longer an issue... they'd just slow ya down.
  19. While I'm not afraid of arithmetic, I prefer the percentage because I don't try & figure out how much I need to do to level... I just have fun making asteroids go *boom* and occasionally beaming monsters to their death. I'm not in a race to get to a level. I just like to know how I'm doing in general. There's nothing wrong with the actual numerical presentation of experience, and I applaud it as an option. However, I'd hate for the option of percentage to be taken away either. Since someone said it would require a change to the client, then that would nix the whole idea at present. <insert your favorite explicitve> Should we gain permission of EA or ownership of E&B from EA, then that would change.
  20. In Live, the V'Rix were neutral for a while (many months... was it a year or 2?). Irritating, but neutral. There has to be a time period where players can make up their own mind before the possibility of a shooting war starts. That way, people won't have to bust their keisters building faction for a week or 2... or someone comes back from vacation or final exams only to find themselves in a situation they wouldn't want. Even in Live, I had built up my V'Rix faction enough so that when it was cut in half, the V'Rix were still friendly to me. I even fed them more mordanite for a bit. The V'Rix left me alone, so this type of behavior is not unprecedented or just my idea. My suggestion of the percentage of players who have positive faction with the V'Rix would be a good indicator of the will of the gaming community on that server. Only 1 server currently, but we're hoping for more later. If a large majority (2/3rds to 100%) of the players on a server like the V'Rix (build up a significant positive faction with them), then the dev's shouldn't force a war between the V'Rix and the players. That would just tick people off. If it's close to even (40% to 60% or so) one way or the other, then the V'rix still shouldn't go to war, but might fade away. If only a few (0% to 20% or so) of the people develop positive faction with the V'Rix, then that's a good indication that the dev's should bring on a V'Rix war. In any of the above cases, players who bothered to advance their factions highly with the V'Rix shouldn't be attacked by them, unless they attack the V'Rix [which will also lower their V'Rix faction]. If a V'Rix friendly player is merely grouped with folks the V'Rix are attacking, the friendly ones should have an option to just sit out of the combat [leaving their XP and faction unchanged], enter combat [lowering their faction], or leaving the group [and thus the wrath of the V'rix]. Regardless of whether or not the V'Rix decide to attack, people who have built themselves up to massively friendly (within 90% or less of maximum) should be allowed to go into V'Rix areas, if any such are developed. It would be so cool to be able to work for the V'Rix, do jobs for them, and even possibly gain another type of V'Rix faction!
  21. Two chickens (each 3Kg in mass and posessing an infinite lifespan, barring accidental death) leave the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies at the exact same time on a direct course for each other. Their launch points are 1 light year from the closest points of each galaxy to the other one (open space). They accelerate from 0 meters / sec [relative to the center of each of their galaxies] with a constant 1M Newtons of thrust [assume 0 mass for the engine & propellant for ease of calculations]. Over the centuries, they will reach an appreciable fraction of light speed, and thus have a relativistic mass far greater than their "rest" mass. Now the big question: On impact... will the trees in the Hurtgen Forest in Germany care? For those who want a serious challenge, you can attempt to find their FINAL velocity, their relativistic mass, the type of collision [how much will be elastic & how much inelastic], how much mass will be converted into energy and what forms of energy that will be in. Then calculate the absolute magnitude of the flash, and the relative magnitude at [1] the rim of the Milky Way galaxy, [2] the approximate location of Sol at that time [remember: the Milky Way will be ROTATING during this time... take this into account!], and [3] the relative magnitude at the center of the milky way, assuming you could get a line-of-sight to it... somehow. For those who want a lesser challenge: assume a final velocity of 98% light speed. Determine the answers to the questions above. Also, find what the average thrust would have to be, taking into increasing relativistic mass. For a bit more challenge... do it twice, once from the chicken's frame of reference [3Kg mass & time distortion] and from an outside frame of reference.
  22. With permissions for different compartments, abuse can be not only managed, but quickly identified and stopped (for that toon) in the future. Ultimately, anything can be re-looted, re-made, re-mined, etc. With limits (both in credits and in items per compartment that are based on the permissions set, this becomes an abuse *RESISTANT* system. No system is abuse-PROOF. The logs will show any abusers, and new members should be given little, if any, access, and tested out over time. Someone who's a stellar member for 2 to 3 weeks or more can be given a fuzz more access and see what they do with it. It would take a very patient person to seriously hurt a guild that uses descretion & slow advancement for their members. However, a wide-open guild vault with no restrictions *IS* a bad idea. <points back up to the very first post in the forum>
  23. Confirmed. Guild chat is working... however, some people get wrapped up in combat, mining, or other activites and don't monitor guild chat like they should. Thus the shout-outs aren't the cure-all. Members don't always announce themselves when they log on, so having to ask "who's on" several times an hour would be tedious.
